Is Conor McGregor's UFC career fading into oblivion with no comeback plan in sight?

Conor McGregor is desperate for a fight. The Irishman’s career has been a recipient of misfortune, injury woes, and other self-inflicted shenanigans that have kept him on the sidelines for the past three years. Earlier this year, the former two-division champ fractured his toe and was forced to pull out from a scheduled bout against Micheal Chandler. It seems likely that McGregor’s return will not happen until early 2025 since Chandler will likely take at least a few months’ break after fighting Charles Oliveira in November.

In further bad news for McGregor fans, it seems there is no real timeline for ‘Mac’s comeback yet, as UFC legend Chael Sonnen revealed on his YouTube channel. “I was just with Michael Chandler one week ago in Florida. And in visiting with Michael Chandler, it did become very obvious like what Chandler and Conor had going and when that fight was going to happen, or if it’s going to happen, or if it’s still going to happen. One thing that was very obvious through my visits with Michael Chandler is there is not a plan that hasn’t been revealed to us, the audience,” Sonnen said.

The verbose UFC analyst, based upon conversations with Chandler believes Dana White and co. indeed have made no plans yet for when (or even if) McGregor’s comeback bout will happen. Sonnen felt that the UFC CEO was being perfectly honest, and not playing 5-D chess with the fans to create hype for ‘Mac’s return when he claimed that they would just have to wait and see.

“There isn’t something that these guys, the fighters themselves or the promotion, they got this little plan. There’s not. It really does come down to what Dana White constantly says which is ‘Let’s see what happens,'” he added. This is why Chandler could not be faulted for wanting to fight someone else since there is so much uncertainty around the Irishman’s comeback.

Chandler moving on is a worrying sign for Conor McGregor’s comeback

Michael Chandler, of course, virtually put his career on hold for the past 18 months waiting for Conor McGregor. The duo, of course, appeared as rival coaches on season 31 of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ last year, and were expected to settle their rivalry inside the octagon. The former Bellator champion even stuck around for a few months after his scheduled late June clash against ‘Mac’ was shelved just two weeks from the date.

But now, he has had enough and is going into a rematch with Charles Oliveira since his “legacy is not hinged upon this fight.” Moreover, some fear that ‘Mac’s comeback may never happen, and Chandler’s decision to search for a different fight avenue is another indication of this. However, that seems not to be the case since the Irishman has been very vocal in asking the UFC for an opponent, even having suggested he could fight lightweight star Dan ‘Hangman’ Hooker in February.

What does seem likely, however, is what Sonnen has claimed- the UFC has no concrete plans for McGregor’s comeback. At least not yet. Otherwise, something would have leaked. What do you think about Chael Sonnen’s revelations about the status of Conor McGregor’s comeback?
