Dana White vs. Conor McGregor: Who's right about fixing UFC's officiating woes?

Conor McGregor was livid with the way the Jose Aldo vs Mario Bautista fight was officiated, prompting him to post a plethora of tweets. He even called out the up-and-coming contender for stalling during the fight, proposing a new idea to prevent such occurrences. However, Dana White doesn’t seem to be on the same page as McGregor when it comes to his proposition.

The former dual-weight champion wants to introduce a stalling clock, or in his words, the ‘McGregor Clock’. “As referee, if the fighters go to the same place of [stall] over and over I would be putting the position on a clock,” said Conor McGregor on Twitter. However, Dana White claimed that there wasn’t a need for any clock, rather just a bit of “common sense” among referees.

“I don’t even think you need a clock. I mean, it’s common sense,” Dana White stated in the post-fight pressers“When the guy keeps doing it and is doing everything he can to not fight and not win the fight, as a ref, you should break it up immediately.” However, the UFC CEO did mention that fighters should be given some time to get their move locked in, and if there’s too much struggle which would then lead to stalling, the referee must intervene immediately.

“If he just did it three rounds in a row and keeps doing it… give him a couple seconds [and] see if he gets a takedown, then break it up,” Dana White added. So, the biggest story of the night came from the Jose Aldo vs Mario Bautista fight, besides his problems with the referees at UFC 307, the 55-year-old also came unglued on the judges as well.

Not only referees, but judges got some stiff from Dana White, too

The UFC CEO echoed the same sentiment as many others on social media, expressing dislike for the way the judges scored the fight. He summed his thoughts up perfectly with one word: completely and utterly “atrocious.” “I thought the judging was atrocious tonight. I will just leave it at that. It was atrocious,” Dana White further stated.

Moreover, when he was later asked about the situation involving Cesar Almeida poking Ihor Potieria’s eyes and the referee didn’t even give him a single warning, the UFC CEO claimed to have missed that bit. However, when Marc Ratner, the UFC VP of Regulatory Affairs, passed the news to White, they immediately decided to get the referee, Dave Seljestad, out of the event. “I missed that. I was in my room and we were talking to people. But Ratner walked in right after it happened, and was like ‘Yeah, that ain’t happening again tonight,'” White added.
