Dana White is the UFC Boss and he’s the head of it all for a reason. The CEO has found timely opportunities and made his mark in order to make the promotion what it is today. In fact, just recently, he shared an anecdote about how he saw a chance to buy the organization in the late 90s.

In the 90s, the UFC was struggling. Simultaneously, it was receiving more and more attention from athletes around the world, and White saw an opportunity to get it all for himself. Nowadays, he rules with an iron fist but how did it all start?

White and the Fertitta brothers, Lorenzo and Frank saw a certain chance when Bob Myrowitz’s UFC was going bankrupt. In the late 90s because of the terrible reputation of the sport, things were going to shambles. However, where everyone saw ruins, White identified opportunity.

“I got into a contract negotiation with Bob Myrowitz, the old owner from New York and he flipped out on me one day and he said, ‘You know what? There is no more money. I don’t even know if I can put on another event’,” said White. “Hung up the phone, I called Lorenzo Fertitta and I said, I think the UFC’s in trouble. I think we can buy em and I think we should. Only two months later, we bought it for 2 million bucks.”

White opened up about all of this on the Donald Trump Jr., talk show Triggered. The UFC Boss has had close bonds with the Trump family for several years now. The two talked about White’s fascinating beginnings as well as his relationship with Donald Trump, the former President of the United States.

White also spoke about how his and Fertitta’s love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is what brought them together to collaborate for the promotion. White had started managing some of the newer fighters and that’s just about when the contract negotiations with Meyrowitz went down.

Currently, a merger between the WWE and the UFC has resulted in a co-shared ownership of the promotion. It is primarily owned by TKO Holdings, an organization that’s a conglomerate of the WWE and Zuffa, a company owned by White and the Fertitta brothers.

White used to be the president of the UFC, after the merger, he’s a CEO. However, he’s still the sharp spearhead of the promotion as he has been for ages now. His other interests such as Power Slap have done nothing to divert his attention away from the UFC. The organization has grown a lot and one can see how he plays a big role.
