UFC CEO Dana White is known as the man behind UFC’s monumental success. The promotion retains a rough history from its early days, being banned in many US states after being deemed ‘human cockfighting’. And now despite White’s role in making the UFC the premiere MMA organization in the world today, his latest endeavor hasn’t found the same appeal with fans as he might have hoped for.

‘PowerSlap’ is White’s attempt at making slap fighting a mainstream sport. However, concerns have been voiced by various experts about the possibility of head trauma being sustained by the contestants. Hence when White shared an update on social media promoting ‘PowerSlap 5’, the reactions by the fans seemed to indicate the community wasn’t pleased with White’s newest promotion.

The controversy around slapfighting surfaces mainly around the fact that the contestants are not permitted to defend themselves. Participants stand in front of a table with their hands behind their backs, and any movement or dodging results in penalties. Experts have pointed out the high risk of concussions and CTE for those taking part in slap fighting.

Dana White however has been vocal about his thoughts on critics of the ‘sport’. He has made the argument that “Fighters in boxing take 300 to 400 punches per fight”. White claims slapping is safer due to the fact that contestants only take 3-5 slaps per event. But with a potential knockout for every slap, safety is one of the primary concerns.

Recently, White shared a post on Twitter/X where he promoted the upcoming Power Slap 5 event. But fan reactions indicate their concern for the safety and legitimacy of the sport.

Here’s how the fans reacted:

Many fans stated their disgust at the event.

And others made it known that they don’t care much for the ‘sport’

Fans also stated that this sport doesn’t deserve to have a ‘belt’

Others were more straightforward in their response

Fans also took humorous digs at the promotion’s name

The rules and other aspects of the ‘sport’ were also questioned.

And concerns around deeming this a ‘sport’ were loud and clear!

Others also stated their displeasure

Overall, the sentiment is overwhelmingly negative, with fans finding the league unimpressive and questionable in terms of its legitimacy. But with UFC 295 on the horizon, MMA fans are definitely not interested in slap fighting and clearly have something to look forward to!
