The MMA community has been split into two groups ever since Islam Makhachev dethroned Jon Jones as the number one fighter on the UFC P4P rankings. Following h͏is͏ ͏win ͏ov͏er Alexander Volkanovs͏ki, many believe that the Dagestani is definitely the best fighter in the UFC. However, others like Dana White are of the opinion that the P4P throne belongs to ͏J͏on Jones. But who is the real P4P king? Well, the answer has been provided by none other than Joe Rogan as he questions the quality of the rankings as well as the process.
͏On JRE #2239, Rogan sat down for a conversation with Derek Munro of Derek More Plates More Dates. While the UFC commentator revealed his thought that Jon Jones might be the true MMA GOAT, he might not be the current P4P kingpin. Despite Jones being on the top for 14 years, it is Islam Makhachev who currently rules the UFC. However, he is definitely not in favor of the process through which UFC fighters are ranked on the P4P list.
Rogan claimed that while many who do MMA are able to understand the beauty and significance of a move, the journalists who vote rely on guesswork. This lack of understanding is what causes them to make errors on the P4P rankings. He used the finishing sequence of the Jones-Miocic fight from UFC 309 as an example: “Like when Jon threw that kick, I see that kick, and I go, ‘That was beautiful.’ That was beautiful because I know how it kicks. I know what’s supposed to happen. You’re just guessing. You’re guessing on what’s supposed to—you’ve never done that on somebody. If you’ve never done that, you don’t know how beautiful that is. You don’t really get it. You kind of get it, but you get it the way I get flying a plane. I never flew a plane.”

The JRE host said that many of the experts who rank the fighters do not have firsthand MMA experience; as a result, they do not know much about the real effort that goes into it and how one is supposed to be ranked. While he did say that he did not wish to disparage any of these media people since he liked them and was friends with a lot of them; there’s no way they understand someone’s ability unless they’ve done martial arts.
Despite them choosing Islam Makhachev to sit atop the UFC P4P throne, it looks like Rogan is definitely not a fan of the process through which the fighters are chosen for the rankings. But it is Dana White who hates the journalists more than Joe Rogan. So much so that he asked Mark Zuckerberg for help as soon as Jon Jones was not given the #1 spot in the rankings. But what exactly happened? Let’s find out.

Despite his dominant win against Stipe Miocic at U͏FC 30͏9,͏ Jon Jones failed to claim the #1 spot in ͏the P4P rankings after being left in the #3 spot before the fight. But while ‘Bones’ was disappointed, Dana White was left furious after the development took place. Taking to his Instagram story, the UFC head honcho wrote, “I have to get rid of these clowns @zuck let’s get this ai deal done asap.” But what is this AI deal that the UFC boss talked about?

Well, the head honcho wants to implement artificial intelligence to rank fighters. He previously revealed that he had several meetings with the Meta boss to bring AI into the UFC that will help “fix” the rankings. So, when will they bring this much-needed tool? According to Dana White, it would be in 2025. “I’m totally going to fix the rankings. We’re going to make a lot of strong moves here, coming into 2025,” he said in a media interview.
Not just that, according to reports, the UFC has made a deal with IBM to also develop an AI engine that will help the promotion enhance their broadcast and digital coverage of the events. So it surely looks like Dana White’s ambition is to make a very high-tech promotion with a lot of automation. But what do you think? Will it affect the quality of the UFC? Let us know in the comments.
