Finally, UFC fans have an update on Conor McGregor‘s comeback fight. The Irishman has announced on social media that he will be fighting Michael Chandler on June 29 next year. However, shockingly, ‘Notorious’ claimed that the fight would be an 185-pound middleweight bout — a division neither fighter has fought at before.

Of course, ‘Notorious’ is not a reliable source of information as he has proven time and again (he had publicly announced he would be fighting Chandler in December ’23 at a boxing event in London earlier this year, for example), and fans would be wise to wait for an official announcement from the UFC to confirm the timeline. UFC commentator and former champion Daniel Cormier reacted to this news and felt this date was forced on ‘Mac’ despite him being, by far, the biggest star in the promotion’s history.

‘DC’ thinks Conor McGregor wanted to fight at UFC 300 but was refused

Cormier felt that McGregor wanted to make his much-awaited comeback at UFC 300, but was refused by the UFC. ‘DC’s analysis does hold weight given that both McGregor and UFC CEO Dana White had indicated earlier this year that the Irishman may fight at UFC 300.

However, he felt the UFC did not proceed with this plan as ‘Mac’s comeback may have been obscured by the various title fights the UFC is planning for the anniversary card in April, which is why the date had been moved up to June.

“You’re right he does have a stronghold on the sport and the organization but I almost say this to me, being an international fight week, was his best option because he didn’t have his ideal option. I believe that he wanted to fight at UFC 300, and he just didn’t get the date, that’s my thought RC,” Cormeir told co-host Ryan Clark on ESPN MMA’s DC & RC show.

“So maybe, maybe to Brett’s point, the way that he feels where ‘can we take this serious’ has loosened the stronghold a little bit because generally Conor would have just gotten what he wanted,” the former two-division UFC champion added. Cormier has also warned the Missouri native to do everything he can to shift the power dynamics between them like Khabib Nurmagomedov did before their UFC 229 super-fight.

‘DC’ thinks McGregor is trying to make Chandler uncomfortable

Cormier felt that the reason why Conor McGregor had announced that his comeback fight against Chandler after two years out of the octagon would be at 185-pounds was because he wanted to play with the latter and make him as uncomfortable as possible to give himself an edge. ‘Mac’ is famous for his mental games and tries to get inside his opponent’s minds before a fight.

When it works, McGregor is able to knock out Jose Aldo within 13 seconds. But when it doesn’t it really backfires as it didn’t against Khabib Nurmagomedov (who genuinely tried to take ‘Mac’s life in their bout) or even Nate Diaz. Cormier advised the former Bellator champion to follow Khabib Nurmagomedov’s example and refuse to play the Dubliner’s games in an attempt to shift the power dynamics away from McGregor.
