Two things particularly stood out about Charles Oliveira’s win over Michael Chandler at UFC 309. First, this was Charles Oliveira’s first five-round fight in 46 matches. Second, it was his first decision to victory since beating Tony Ferguson four years ago.

Charles Oliveira defeated Chandler via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-45), but the five-round war kept fans at the edge of their seats from start to finish. The Brazilian star dominated through the first four rounds, before a daring comeback by Chandler. Notably, this is Oliveira’s second win over Chandler since UFC 262 in March 2021. For their stellar performance, each fighter pocketed $50,000, apart from the Fight of the Night bonus. It seems like ‘Do Bronx’ is looking to reclaim the lightweight throne that he earlier lost. In the process, he is bagging all the bonuses that one can get.

As for Chandler, it is his third FoTN, and fifth bonus of his six-fight UFC career. But despite this, of course, what also matters to a fighter are his fights and his wins, and looks like Chandler leaves behind with some regret after his loss. “Charles is a champion. Charles is a consummate professional. Hats off to him. You know, the first couple of rounds, I was trying to get things going. I feel like I gave up a couple of those rounds in order to, hopefully, put it on him in a later round. I was present. I was there. I just couldn’t get anything going tonight. Call it what you want to call it, but that fifth round sure was a lot of fun roller coaster,” he said in a post-race conversation.

As for his opponent, Oliveira had a lot on the line, too. “I didn’t want to talk about it because if we lose it’s taken as an excuse. If we win, we value it. But I had a knee injury. I tore or burst two ligaments. I was supposed to be out of action for four to six weeks. But I didn’t want to pull out of this fight at all because I knew that if I won I could fight for the title again.”

With the FoTN bonus, the Brazilian finisher became the fighter with the most bonuses received (20) in UFC history. Not just that, but Oliveira also became the first fighter to earn $1 million in bonuses from company president Dana White, after the UFC 309 became the second highest gate ever at the historic Madison Square Garden. There were 20,000 fans in attendance, with a 16.7 million US gate.

Well, it sure looks like there is no stopping Charles Oliveira. However, he wasn’t the only UFC fighter who was busy shattering records in UFC 309. Jon Jones, widely considered the MMA GOAT, also created several records in his very first UFC heavyweight championship title defense. So what were the records?

Joining Charles Oliveira, Jon Jones creates history yet again

In the main event of UFC 309, heavyweight champion Jon Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) returned from a 20-month break to face Stipe Miocic (20-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC), and it isn’t far-fetched to say that ‘Bones’ simply outclassed him with relative ease. He proved his dominance spectacularly via a third-round TKO that further etched his name into the all-time Octagon record books.

In his career, Jon Jones created several records that are a tough follow-up for any fighter in his division. ‘Bones’ became the fourth fighter in UFC history to make title defenses in two weight classes, after Henry Cejudo, Amanda Nunes, and Daniel Cormier. His eight wins in UFC title fights are tied with Matt Hughes (eight) for the second most in company history behind Anderson Silva (nine).

His 20-fight undefeated streak in the UFC is also the longest among active UFC fighters. This further proves that there is a reason why many consider him the MMA GOAT. However, for the ones in doubt, they’ll love it if Jon Jones goes up against Tom Aspinall to prove them wrong. For now, fans will just have to wait and see how things play out between the UFC, Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall.
