Is Conor McGregor's latest callout a genuine challenge or just another publicity stunt?

UFC 308 really delivered. While Robert Whittaker getting submitted by Khamzat Chimaev in round 1 of the co-main event shocked everyone, Ilia Topuria defended his belt from Max Holloway in the main event with a vicious KO win. It seems Conor McGregor kept a close watch on these two fights. After all, he bet on Whittaker and Holloway to win by knockout and he would have received more than $17 million had the fights turned out in his favor.

Conor McGregor stayed quite active on X while these fights were going on. For instance, when Chimaev took ‘Bobby Knuckles’ right against the fence of the octagon as the bout began, the commentators believed ‘Borz’ was out to hunt. But the Irishman disagreed and tweeted, “Hunt? Backing up against the fence opening bell is hunting?”

Then when Chimaev won the bout, McGregor posted, “Abysmal”. Similarly, he wrote a cryptic tweet after the Topuria versus Holloway bout was done and Dana White has some thoughts on it.

During the UFC 308 post-fight press conference, a reporter asked White:

Reporter: “Conor McGregor tweeted ‘Call me’ after the main event.”
Dana White: “Lenee just told me that.”
Reporter: “Who do you think he is referring to? Max at 155 for the BMF maybe or him and Ilia, who have had a lot of stuff to say to each other in recent months?”
Dana White: “I don’t know [who McGregor called out]. I think he did it to get this – we’re all sitting here, going, ‘Huh? What did he mean?'”

The UFC CEO laughed as he responded. It seems McGregor’s tweet has left everyone confused. As we all know, calling out someone isn’t an uncommon thing for him. Justin Gaethje, Belal Muhammad, and many more have come under The Notorious’s radar and he has spared none of them with his trash-talking prowess.

While White might be confused about the tweet, people are sure it was for Topuria. How? Well, when ‘Championship Rounds’ on X stated that McGregor’s ‘Call me’ tweet was regarding Topuria knocking out Holloway, McGregor reshared it and wrote, “Good little fighter, too small for anything substantial IMO. He was getting chewed up there.”

But the champion wouldn’t sit back and take the disrespect. When Brett Okamoto read out McGregor’s tweet, the champion was exasperated. “I don’t know what to say. F— him, I’m telling you f— him. He fakes the comeback every time, he insults everyone in the UFC, he is like ‘I don’t care about anyone, ahh, I don’t respect anyone’.”

“Bro, you’re f—ing sick, you have some problems to fix in your f—ing mind. You need to take some classes on respect and how to treat people because you’re going to end up really, really bad. When you follow these kinds of values in life, you end up really bad. So ask God not to cross paths with me, never ever, because I am going to f— you up whenever I’m going to see you.”

While McGregor may have refused to appreciate Ilia Topuria’s hard-earned win, Dana White gave him the flowers he deserved!

Dana White lauds Ilia Topuria after the UFC 308 victory!

Dana White was visibly impressed with how his UFC 308 main event turned out, especially the main event, which delivered on the promise of a thrilling affair. He praised both headliners but was greatly impressed by Ilia Topuria, who secured the record of being the only UFC fighter to ever KO Max Holloway.

“Incredible performance by both guys, but Topuria did something that nobody has ever done before,” the UFC CEO stated in the post-fight presser.

Furthermore, he thinks that there’s no more means for people to doubt Ilia Topuria after his statement win at UFC 308. Having defeated Alexander Volkanovski, who’s arguably one of the greatest if not the greatest featherweight in UFC history, he cemented his legacy by beating Max Holloway. “He’s legit. If you question the guy after ‘Volk’, I mean, you can’t question him after tonight,” Dana White added.

Ilia Topuria’s performance earned him not just a victory but also extended his undefeated streak, 16-0. The UFC featherweight champion has a bigger reason to celebrate, as he not only won the fight but also received a bonus for his finish. Reports suggest that Topuria will fight Volkanovski in a rematch, especially after their interaction after the main event at UFC 308.
