Is Conor McGregor's 'McGregor Clock' the solution UFC needs to prevent stalling in fights?

Although it was a close fight, the legendary Jose Aldo came up short against the up-and-coming Mario Bautista. However, there were a lot of people who took issues with the referee’s decision to hand the 31-year-old the win. That list of people even included Aldo’s former rival, Conor McGregor, who seems to have an idea that he wants Dana White to implement in UFC fights.

Mario Bautista made heavy use of the wrestling approach against Jose Aldo, who had no choice but to defend the pressure from his opponent for most of the fight. His wrestling approach saw him stalling ‘Junior’ for a considerable amount of time and failing to land takedowns, which drew some negative reactions from the fans. The referee also came under fire for letting Bautista’s stalling tactic go throughout the fight. As such, they do not agree with the judges handing the 31-year-old a split decision win. So what can the UFC do here to fix this? Well, Conor McGregor suggests Dana White enforce the ‘McGregor Clock’ rule.

“It’s bad form but an easy fix! Referees need to implement the “McGregor Clock” method,” tweeted Conor McGregor. “Some refs won’t like I named that clock after myself but whatever, call it what ya’s want. But implement it! Dana, say it to them.” Will Dana White go through with this suggestion? Only time will tell. But what is this proposed method?

Conor McGregor believes that referees need to take strict action when stalling takes place during fights. He suggested that they step to break up clinching against the cage. “As referee, if the fighters go to the same place of [stall] over and over I would be putting the position on a clock, and each time they end back there the clock goes shorter,” McGregor added in another tweet. While it remains to be seen if Dana White takes his biggest star’s advice into account, he did take a drastic step at UFC 307 due to a referee error.

Dana White sends a referee packing at UFC 307

There were a lot of questions raised at UFC 305 after Jairzinho Rozenstruik‘s win over Tai Tuivasa. One of the judges, Howie Booth, came under fire for his unusual score for that fight, and as a result, was relieved of his duties for the night before he even got to score for the co-main event, which was initially assigned to him. Similarly, this time Dana White and Co. had to ask referee Dave Seljestad to step down from his duties for the night after letting Cesar Almeida escape without any repercussions despite poking his opponent, Ihor Potieria, in the eye multiple times.

When asked about going unearned despite poking his opponent in the eye, Cesar Almeida did not seem surprised by the referee’s actions. Even though fans pointed out those illegal moves, the Brazilian claimed that such things always happen in MMA fights. “This is normal. This is MMA… The fans say this [sound off about the eye pokes] but in the cage, it’s very hard,” Almeida stated after the fight.

Referee errors have been rampant in the UFC, and Conor Mcgregor isn’t the only one to point that out. However, let us know what you think about the situation and your thoughts about the ‘McGregor Clock’ method in the comments down below.
