The PFL finally granted Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire what he had been asking for weeks. After the PFL bought out Bellator FC back in 2023, things became troubling for the champions at Bellator. One of the troubles included the fighters craving for action and left without a fight for months. On top of that, low fighter pay also plagued the promotion. ‘Pitbull’, along with others like Patchy Mix, asked Donn Davis and Pete Murray to release them from their contracts. And now, the former Bellator featherweight is free.

Davis took to X and let the 37-year-old fighter go with a tweet. The PFL boss wrote, “We are releasing [Patricio Pitbull]. [PFL MMA] is all about opportunity. I founded this company to create new great opportunities for top fighters. PFL has and will continue to do that for all top fighters who want to be here.” Needless to say, Pitbull rejoiced. But he wasn’t exactly free, because the PFL still retained his matching rights. But his plea was heard yet again.

Within an hour of the featherweight fighter’s reply to Davis’ tweet, the Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at PFL, Loren Mack, gave ‘Pitbull’s management team a call and announced that the release was indeed unconditional. Taking to X to announce the news, ‘Pitbull’ wrote, “Thank you [Donn Davis] and [Pete Murray] for doing what is right. I’ll be waiting for the corrected release letter.”

While Patricio ‘Pitbull’ has been asking for his release since December, his tweet about putting up a fighters’ union was what seemingly pushed the officials to make the decision. Well, he did tag Francis Ngannou in the tweet, making it a big deal. He wrote, “Hey [Francis Ngannou] are you aware of all the absurd things PFL is doing to fighters and putting on the new contracts? Will you ever speak up for us? I’m thinking it’s time we start a PFL Fighters Union. What do you think?”

The Mac Life Official shared the news on Instagram. No doubt, the fighting community dropped down to the comments section to reveal their thoughts. And the fight fans were quick to expect Dana White and Co. to take the 37-year-old in their roster.

Fans ask Dana White to give Patricio Pitbull a spot in the UFC

Most of the fans bashed PFL for being selective regarding their fighters. But the most common thought was for the UFC CEO to bring in the featherweight. One fan wrote, “[PFL MMA] keeps who they want and don’t want. That’s why they’re going down instead of up. Pitbull is an exciting fighter. [Dana White] pick this dude up. 🙌” Another fan asked White to “pick up the phone.” Of course, the fight fans were excited to watch Pitbull fight in the Octagon. A comment read, “Hell yeah! Now he can go to UFC.”

What’s your perspective on:

Will Dana White take a chance on 37-year-old Pitbull, or is he too old for UFC?

However, there was one issue that had the potential to restrict White from getting ‘Pitbull’ a contract. And it was the featherweight fighter’s age. He was already beyond his prime, and he might not stay active for long. One fan weighed in on this and wrote, “37yo featherweight now. id be surprised if hes signed to ufc.” Another fan commented, “He’s 37 years old. Dana’s probably just gonna give him a low ball, take it, or leave it offer.”

But what’s going to happen if the UFC head honcho decides against Pitbull’s favor? It was also a concern that ran through the comments section. One comment read, “Lol what’s this tomato can gonna do if Dana doesn’t sign him? Oh well, can’t wait to see Josh Emmett show him levels.” But that didn’t mean he was left without options. Fighting bare-knuckled was still a viable option for the former Bellator champ. A fan suggested, “As much as I would love to see him in the UFC, I know Dana will disappoint. If anything, Pitbull should go to BKFC.”
