Is giving Khalil Rountree Jr. a title shot a slap in the face to more deserving fighters?

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill essentially called out Khalil Rountree Jr. and blasted Dana White for giving him a title shot. #8 ranked ‘The War Horse’ will face champion Alex Pereira at the top of UFC 307, after having pulled out of his UFC 303 clash against Hill earlier this year.

Rountree had been forced to do this because he was under suspension for having ingested an illegal substance. ‘The War Horse’ claimed that he had accidentally ingested the substance because of a mistake by his supplement supplier and the anti-doping body had agreed. But Hill thinks this is still unfair that Rountree gets to leapfrog him despite having admitted to taking an illegal substance, seemingly disbelieving the #8 205-pounder’s claims about it being an accident.

According to ‘Sweet Dreams’, the title shot is tantamount to rewarding a drug cheat, instead of punishing them. “Can’t believe what I just saw announced!!! So a guy pulls out of a contender fight because of failed drug test for a banned substances and gets rewarded with a title shot?!! This is terrible for the sport and makes the rankings completely pointless!!!” Hill tweeted.

Rountree’s case, however, is not a case of him deliberately taking PEDs to get an unfair advantage. And that is not according to us but according to the Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD), which is the UFC’s anti-doping partner. But how do we know that? Well, because it was ‘The War Horse’, who, without having failed any drug tests, went to the CSAD and told them he had ingested a banned substance.

This is why the anti-doping body gave ‘The War Horse’ a very lenient sentence indeed. The body stated in a statement that they were convinced Rountree was telling the truth and only handed him a two-month suspension because of the facts of the case. But Hill is not ready to accept the fact and it might be because ‘Sweet Dreams’ thinks he should be the one fighting for the title since he feels ‘cheated’ by ‘Poatan’.

Why is Jamahal Hill so against Alex Pereira vs. Khalil Rountree on UFC 307?

Have an interesting take?

Hill wants desperately to rematch Alex Pereira. Since being sent to the nether realm by ‘Poatan’ in the first round of their UFC 300 main event bout, ‘Sweet Dreams’ has been angling relentlessly for another shot at the Brazilian. Why? Well, because he feels Pereira ‘cheated’! Hill feels that Pereira took unfair advantage of a brief stop in action to close the distance and knock him out.

The American is sure the outcome would have been very different if ‘Poatan’ had fought fairly. While fans have trashed Hill as a sore loser, what he says is at the very least partly true, even as cheating is too strong a term for it. Pereira did close the distance when Herb Dean tried to stop the action in the first round. However, whether Pereira would have won sans this, at best, ‘sneaky’ move is unclear. And that is exactly what Hill wants to find out.

A clash with Rountree would have been the perfect platform for Hill to make a strong statement and get back into the title picture. Now, not only did he not get to face Rountree, but instead saw him getting a title shot against Pereira, even after failing a drug test.
