Are British UFC fans getting a raw deal with late-night fights and higher PPV costs?

British UFC fans have it harder than their American counterparts. The UFC of course, is an American organization and puts on most of its cards in the country. This puts British fans at a special disadvantage because of the huge time zone difference between the two countries.

Most UFC cards begin past midnight UK time, with the main event usually starting at 3 a.m. Unless the UFC puts on events in the Middle East or in Asia, which are usually broadcast in the UK in the late afternoon. This, of course, means that the fans on the other side of the fans have to stay up until the morning to watch their favorite fighters fight unless the event takes place outside the States.

On the other hand, British fans do have one advantage over the American fans. After all, UK viewers have to pay much less for UFC events. However, that will not be the case for the upcoming UFC 308 and UFC 309 cards. The British fans, who can watch most UFC cards with a simple TNT Sports Box Office subscription will have to shell out 19.99 pounds each to watch the two PPV cards.

UFC 308, of course, is the Dana White-led promotion’s annual Abu Dhabi card and will start in the UK at 5 p.m. on October 26. And the UK fans will have to spend an extra twenty bucks for this privilege. UFC 309, on the other hand, will be telecasted past midnight since it will take place at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 16. However, that card has a very different selling point which virtually no UFC fan will want to miss.

Why are Dana White and Co. making British fans pay extra for UFC 308 and 309?

UFC 308 is set for a scintillating featherweight title clash between champion Ilia Topuria and fan-favorite former champion Max Holloway. This striking masterclass will be preceded by Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev fighting in a virtual number one title contender bout in the co-main event. The main card is also chock full of the UFC’s biggest Muslim stars for the Abu Dhabi card.

What’s your perspective on:

Are British UFC fans getting a raw deal with late-night fights and higher PPV costs?

Have an interesting take?

But the UFC 309 card, despite its odd timings, promises to be a monumental one. After all, Jon Jones is set to defend his heavyweight title in probably his last ever MMA fight against Stipe Miocic atop the MSG card. It hardly needs to be said that the retirement fight of most people’s pick for the greatest mixed martial artist of all time is one of the biggest events in the annals of mixed martial arts. And Dana White and co. are betting that the British fans will pay extra to watch it.

But the British fans, going from their reaction online, aren’t really happy at having to pay for UFC 309 because of its ungodly broadcast time in the UK. Do the inflated prices for these cards make sense? What are your thoughts on the UFC’s decision? Let us know in the comment section below!
