Almost everybody agrees that Belal Muhammad deserves a title shot at welterweight champion Leon Edwards next. The Palestinian is on a nine-fight win streak and is ranked #2 in the division behind Kamaru Usman, who seems to have moved to middleweight for the time being.

After Edwards confirmed that he will be defending his title for the third time at the upcoming UFC 300 anniversary mega card in April, it is almost certain he will face Muhammad on the card. Although it is expected to be a competitive classical grappler vs. striker matchup, UFC commentator and former champion Michael Bisping thinks it doesn’t deserve the honor of headlining the card.

Bisping discussed the potential Belal Muhammad vs. Leon Edwards card in a video posted on his official YouTube account. The Englishman was excited at the prospect of the fight and felt it deserved to be made and felt it was a fight worthy of a main event.

“Of course, there is the talk of Leon Edwards taking on Belal [Muhammad]. That fight needs to happen, Dana said it’s going to happen. Leon wants to fight on UFC 300… it’s an incredible title fight that would be main event a pay-per-view,” he said.

Nevertheless, he felt the fight was not worthy of headlining the anniversary card, which, in the case of UFC 100 and UFC 200 have been fights between the biggest names in the promotion. The former middleweight champion felt Edwards-Muhammad would not be able to generate the kind of excitement among fans required of the main event of an anniversary card.

“But is it the kind of mega matchup? I’m not talking about them as fighters, I’m not talking about them being not worthy to main event. Of course they are, it’s a UFC title fight… But is it this mainstream crossover fight that’s going to have the fans going crazy?” he added.

Of course, whether or not the fight is made and where it is positioned on the card is still up in the air until an official announcement by the UFC and Dana White. But, Muhammad is all in and is taking drastic steps to prepare for the fight.

Belal Muhammad confirmed in a recent interview that he would be going to Dagestan, home of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, to train for his title shot. This is widely considered a good move since the 35-year-old has a wrestling-heavy style of fighting characteristic of fighters from the Russian province.

“I’m planning, for sure, to go to Dagestan, go down there and trade with those guys. It’s to get a new look, to get different feels. And those guys that don’t let you take any days off, or any easy rounds, so that’s always perfect for me. The last time I trained with those guys, we got a dominant finish. And I plan to do the same thing,” he told MMA Junkie.
