Former UFC double champion Henry Cejudo had a disappointing return to action at UFC 288. The 36-year-old sought to reclaim the bantamweight throne upon his return. However, he could not get the job done against current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. Sterling and Cejudo contested in a very close five-round main event title fight. Both stars matched each other on the ground and on the feet. However, the judges awarded a split decision victory to ‘Funkmaster.’

Following the loss, a dejected Cejudo even hinted at retirement during his octagon interview with Joe Rogan. For ‘Triple C,’ anything short of being at the top was unacceptable. Meanwhile, Sterling faced off with Sean O’Malley, confirming he wanted to fight him next.

Chael Sonnen says Henry Cejudo wanted to retire at UFC 288

According to Chael Sonnen, Cejudo had every intention of retiring after the loss at UFC 288. He added that Dana White, however, was too busy to pay attention to Cejudo. The 46-year-old said that Rogan noticed what was happening with Cejudo and made sure he got his moment on the microphone.

Sonnen said, “You’ve got the greatest of all time who’s removed his gloves. Now removing of the gloves is sending a signal to Joe Rogan, who sent it to Craig Borsari in the truck that don’t go off air no matter what. This man is about to retire. And no matter what it costs us to buy 15 extra seconds in the window, we’re doing it out of respect.”

Speaking of White, he said, “Dana doesn’t have time to deal with that. He’s got to go over to the corner and make Merab give the coat back to Suga Sean. It was the greatest part of the night Ariel and nobody understood what was happening.”

Although Cejudo hinted at retirement in the cage, he has since then called for a fight against Sterling’s teammate Merab Dvalishvili. The former ‘champ champ’ wants ‘The Machine’ on the same card as Sterling faces Sean O’Malley for the bantamweight title.
