Vicente Luque and Rafael dos Anjos battled it out in a clash of welterweights at UFC Vegas 78 on August 12 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It was a perfect opportunity for the former UFC champion to win and delight the fans. However, Luque proved to be a challenge too steep for him to climb. While the fans had hoped for thrilling action from the main event, what they received was a clinching contest.
“I know the way for the belt is shorter,” dos Anjos had announced to the presser. He came into the fight on the heels of a splendid win against Bryan Barberena. Therefore, he looked to collect another win and insert himself into the title conversation. Meanwhile, ‘The Silent Assassin’ was on a two-loss skid.

Notably, Luque swept the judges’ scorecard in the headliner as he won the fight via unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47 x2).
What happened in the fight at UFC Vegas 78?
Both fighters sized each other up, but it was Luque who commenced the proceedings with high-body kicks. He assumed the aggressor’s role with his kicks, but not for long as Dos Anjos assumed control of the fight. Dos Anjos landed a right and soon made it a clinching contest, trying to work his way around the fence.
In the second round too, Dos Anjos and Luque unleashed body kicks, but not before the former UFC champion again tested Luque’s takedown defense. However, Luque remained calm and technical, discouraging RDA from aiming for a takedown. Further, he landed some strikes that cut his opponent open. Moreover, by the middle of the third round, he had taken down RDA four times.
In round four, Luque moved forward and mixed up, grappling and striking. On occasions, he felt the heavy blows from dos Anjos, but the latter fought Luque’s fight, and both shied away from going blow for blow in the middle.
In the final round, RDA needed a finish to win the fight and hence unloaded some blows, but failed to claim a win against a fighter larger in frame. The headliner failed to meet the fans’ expectations, as it ended up being predominantly a clinching contest.

I don’t get why RDA was shooting for a clinch when he’s getting outmuscled every time, he should have stayed on the feet more
— S (@utdaxy) August 13, 2023
No more RDA main events

I don’t know how to explain it and I don’t mean anything bad by it but if RDA’s fight style was an ice cream flavor, it would be vanilla. An absolute staple but I need some sprinkles. #UFCVegas78
