All of the UFC world is waiting for Conor McGregor‘s comeback. The Irishman sat out for three years after breaking his leg in his last appearance in the octagon at UFC 264 in July 2021. Finally, the former two-division champ is all set to face Michael Chandler in a welterweight bout on June 29 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There are question marks over the bombastic Dubliner’s abilities and skills as a fighter, which seem to be trending downwards in the past few years. But MMA GOAT contender, Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson is not worried about ‘Mac’ after watching his recent sparring videos.

McGregor is coming off consecutive losses, having fought only four times in the past six years, losing all but one. With his advancing age, recent skid in form, and the serious injury he is coming off, some think the Irishman would be unable to compete with the top guys in the UFC anymore. But, most disagree with this assessment, including ‘Mighty Mouse’.

Demetrious Johnson took a critical look at one of ‘Mac’s training videos and broke down the technical aspects of what the Irishman was doing in his sparring session.

“The guy shot in, he failed. He [Conor] brings him up, knee to the face, right there. Watch what he does, he creates some distance, he measures with this hand right here, he’s measuring. Look at his stance, his stance is ready to go,” Johnson said in a video on his YouTube channel.

McGregor’s sparring partner, during the training, shot in for a double-leg takedown. However, McGregor expertly stuffed this attempt and caught him with a knee to the face. After which the Irishman brought his opponent up, trapping the latter’s right shoulder with his left arm, and using a stiff right on his partner’s head to create some distance between them. McGregor then followed up with a hard left hook to his opponent’s face, which ‘DJ’ pointed out would be the ‘kill shot’ if it were a real fight.

“The guy wants to shoot again, he can sprawl, but he’s measuring right now and once he’s measuring, he’s measuring the Kill Shot… He’s behind the shoulder, this guy’s looking this way, Conor is looking that way, so all the power, Conor’s from the shot is going to go right through this man’s dome. It’s a kill shot, right here. My favorite position to throw a Kill Shot,” Johnson added.

While Chandler is not big on takedowns, preferring to do his work on the feet, ‘Mac’ seems well prepared if the former Bellator champion goes off script and tries to take the UFC megastar to the ground. In fact, because of how the stylistic matchup between the two men stacks up, ‘DJ’ predicted that McGregor has a good chance of defeating Chandler on June 29.

Johnson feels ‘Mac’ is a stylistic nightmare for Chandler

Conor McGregor is probably the greatest striker the sport has ever seen. A veritable sniper, his understanding of range and distance, combined with his precision and ability to seemingly hit his opponents at will is legendary.

Michael Chandler, on the other hand, has a very different approach to fighting. Interested more in having exciting fights than getting into the technical minutiae of fighting, he, according to Johnson, “goes for broke.” His bar brawler approach to fighting contrasts sharply with Mac’s hit-and-don’t-get-hit style of fighting.

This is why the ONE flyweight champ feels the Irishman has the upper hand going into their UFC 303 clash.
