Financially, the most noteworthy fight of the legendary MMA star was a boxing bout against Floyd Mayweather back in 2017. McGregor lost the fight but still made roughly around $100 million off of it.
Apart from both the fighters being legends of their respective sports, McGregor’s unique way of selling fights played a major role in making it one of the highest-grossing events in combat sports history. Even after the fight, the Irishman kept his dislike of Mayweather intact. He kept on indulging in online feuds with ‘Money’ and his team.
In 2018, Floyd Mayweather fought and defeated a 20-year-old Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa. He cashed out $9 million from the fight and topped the Forbes list of highest-earning athletes in 2018.

Shortly after, McGregor took a dig at Mayweather and tweeted, “That 9 milli won’t keep you on top of my list for long, kid. #Forbesy“
It prompted a quick reply from CEO of Mayweather Promotions Leonard Ellerbe, who reminded McGregor of his loss against ‘Money’.
Champ, champ with all due respect I don’t think you want that smoke again💯 https://t.co/IOH2AWCPDj

However, McGregor wasn’t letting him have the last word in the argument. He made a hilarious comeback and referenced Elon Musk’s flamethrower in his reply.
I’m the one with the flamethrower, Leonard.
Call me Elon.
Your guys got nothing but
girl collection.
And there they call him John.

When Conor McGregor praised Floyd Mayweather
Conor McGregor is known for being offensive towards his past and present rivals. He makes sure he gets into their head and win the fights mentally before winning them physically. He used similar antics against Floyd Mayweather as well, but ended up losing the fight.
However, he earned the respect and loads of applause for pouring his heart out during the match. He was also one of the main reasons behind it becoming such a huge pay-per-view event.

But years before the two formed a rivalry and fought inside a boxing ring, McGregor was a fan of Mayweather.
During an old interview with Ariel Helwani, ‘The Notorious’ had nothing but praise for his future nemesis. He praised Mayweather for his fight against Canelo Alvarez and said, “I loved that Mayweather- Canelo fight. That was a master class in defense. Do you know what I mean? A lesson in evasive combat, he taught Canelo. He teaches everyone.”
Little would McGregor know, that years later he would step inside the ring himself to take on Floyd Mayweather.
