Conor McGregor is overjoyed at his SBG gym teammate and former Invicta champion Danni McCormack winning her first fight on ‘The Road to UFC.’ The Irishwoman, who trains under ‘Mac’s coach John Kavanagh, defeated Yan Qihui by a unanimous decision on the fifth episode of the show last night. If she keeps winning, McCormack will undoubtedly be in the UFC soon, especially with someone like Conor McGregor backing her.
‘Mac’ took to social media to congratulate not just McCormack, but also their coach, seeing a bit of himself in the Irishwoman and her supreme self-confidence. “Incredible! Huge congrats @dannimccormack and @John_Kavanagh! @ufc we’ve been here!” McGregor wrote in reply to a tweet that revealed how Kavanagh and McCormack first met.
The original tweet showed a picture of Kavanagh and McCormack at a pool party in 2015, where the Roscommon native declared that she would soon be one of the SBG head coach’s students. Not only did she manage to do that, she is also knocking on the doors of a UFC contract, which she feels is not too far away.

The Irishman also reacted to his teammate’s rousing post-fight speech, where she promised she was ready to take on all comers and was puzzled why she didn’t have a UFC contract already despite her achievements and the hype around her.
“Incredible Irish SBG fighter! @dannimccormack well done champ! Amazing win! #ForgedArmy,” he wrote in another tweet.

John Kavanagh, too, wholeheartedly agrees with McCormack that she deserves to be in the UFC, having even enlisted the help of fans to try to do this. Even the fact that McCormack is fighting on the ‘Road to the UFC’ is in no small part because of the coach and his efforts.

How John Kavanagh and fans got Danni McCormack a shot at a UFC contract
John Kavanagh was so sure that Danni McCormack deserved to be in the UFC that he had called upon the fans to pressure Dana White and co. to sign her. This, he reminded fans, was a tried and tested strategy that had worked to get Conor McGregor into the UFC, and had hoped a pressure campaign from the fans would work for McCormack, too.
“It [the situation with Danni McCormack] reminds me a little bit of back in the day when all the Irish MMA fans almost harassed Dana into giving Conor an opportunity. So if you guys can get on top of that and just keep the word out there, the guys do listen,” Kavanagh said in an interview earlier this year.

While the coach and the fans have not managed to quite get her a UFC contract, they have managed to get her the next best thing- a chance at getting into the UFC. Of course, now everything depends on how the Irishwoman performs in her next few fights, but given her championship pedigree, she looks set to win a UFC contract. However, this is MMA after all, and anything can happen in any fight, but McCormack seems determined to get into the world’s biggest combat sports promotion.
