Conor McGregor, the UFC superstar, has been making headlines with his tweets during UFC 293. While McGregor is currently set to face Michael Chandler following their coaching roles on The Ultimate Fighter, it seems he has a new opponent in his sights.

McGregor, who initially entered the UFC as a featherweight, has expressed interest in challenging Alexander Volkanovski, the current featherweight champion and the #2 ranked fighter on the Men’s Pound-for-Pound list. In classic McGregor style, the 35-year-old responded with a series of tweets, taunting Volkanovski and questioning the UFC’s Pound-for-Pound rankings.

This fascination with Volkanovski dates back to May 2023 when ESPN MMA posted a tweet suggesting that a fight between McGregor and Volkanovski at featherweight could determine the undisputed champion of the division. Volkanovski responded to the ESPN tweet, indicating his willingness to fight but suggesting a lightweight bout, a weight class higher than his usual competition.

During UFC 293, McGregor unleashed a tweet that has sent shockwaves through the MMA world. He stated, “Ask my bollox that little sausage Volkanovski is no way p4p 1. Silly. That’s quick work for me. 100% accuracy work. Readable. Hittable. Hurtable. I like he has this title tho we should fight at some stage so the FW goats will have all faced off and let there be no debate.”

As of now, there hasn’t been a response from Volkanovski to Conor’s latest call-out. But McGregor’s tweet has sparked speculation about a potential showdown between two of the most dominant featherweights in their primes. However, McGregor still has his upcoming bout with Michael Chandler on the horizon.

Will McGregor fight this year?

McGregor’s last UFC appearance was at UFC 264 in 2021, where he suffered a severe leg injury during his fight against Dustin Poirier. Following his coaching role on The Ultimate Fighter opposite Chandler, it was widely anticipated that McGregor would face ‘Iron’ Michael in his next fight.

Initially, McGregor had plans to fight in December of this year at UFC 296. However, those plans hit a roadblock due to McGregor being out of the USADA testing pool, which requires a minimum of 6 months of active testing before a fight.

UFC president Dana White recently revealed that the schedule for the Chandler vs. McGregor bout has been adjusted following the TUF finale. According to White on the ‘Crain & Company’ podcast, the UFC is actively planning the McGregor vs. Chandler fight, considering the ongoing season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’ Not making this fight happen would be nonsensical, and there’s a hope to schedule it for early next year.
