Is McGregor's purse-doubling move a sign of his growing influence in combat sports?

Conor McGregor has done it again, this time shaking up the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship’s (BKFC) first-ever outing in Spain! Earlier this year, the Irish MMA icon had announced that he’s now a part-owner of the promotion through his venture, ‘McGregor Sports and Entertainment’. Since then, ‘The Notorious’ has been actively promoting the organization at every opportunity.

At the latest BKFC event, the Irish superstar turned what was already a historic night into a ‘red-panty’ moment for both fighters in the main event. After the pair left their blood, sweat, and pride in the ring, McGregor stepped in with an offer no one, even BKFC president David Feldman could have expected!

Franco Tenaglia claimed the BKFC lightweight title after a brutal five-round war with Tony Soto. It was the perfect ending for BKFC’s first-ever event in Spain, but McGregor wasn’t satisfied with just a title. While BKFC President David Feldman was in the middle of announcing the introduction of bonuses, McGregor had other ideas.

Snatching the microphone, he declared that both Tenaglia and Soto would get their purses doubled. “No, no, no, no,” McGregor interrupted Feldman. “We are going to do bonuses, yes, but what we are going to do for these gentlemen is double their pay!” he exclaimed, with his signature boldness.

The decision caught everyone off guard, especially Feldman, who suddenly found himself in a financial pickle. McGregor, who is a co-owner of BKFC, wasn’t just about giving bonuses; he wanted to make a statement. A fight of this magnitude, he believed, deserved more than just a pat on the back.

McGregor later took to X to celebrate the moment, stating, “DOUBLED THEIR PURSE AND HAPPILY! You put in a fight like that, in the main event? The World Is Yours! Bravo Franco Tenaglia and Tony ‘Loco’ Soto! Vamos España!!!”

It’s no wonder McGregor felt compelled to act. The Tenaglia-Soto bout was pure chaos, the kind of fight that leaves both fighters and fans breathless. Defense? It was out the window! The two warriors stood in the pocket, exchanging punches in a relentless back-and-forth for most of the bout. But while Conor McGregor’s post-fight generosity may have stunned David Feldman, the BKFC president recently revealed an intriguing idea himself!

Imagine the chaos if Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather ditched the gloves and fought bare-knuckle. David Feldman, the president of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), certainly can! Ahead of the BKFC Spain event, McGregor had hinted that there are talks about him re-matching ‘Money’ but in a higher weight class and with fewer rounds.

But according to Feldman, there’s a better option on the table! In an interview with BloodyElbow.com, Feldman stated, “‘I’d love to see Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor in bare-knuckle because I think it’s a whole different fight, with the clinching that you can do and getting hit with the knuckles’.”

In his eyes, taking off the gloves would level the playing field and introduce a new layer of pain. Why? He further explained, “It’s not necessarily that you’re getting hit and you’re getting flashes and concussed, but you get hit on the cheekbone and you’re like, ‘Oh, man, that hurt’.”

Feldman believes this change would force both fighters to adapt. It’s not about who has the slicker defense or the quicker jab. In BKFC, it’s about who can endure the unique pain of bare-knuckle combat. And while Mayweather is a master of boxing’s art of defense, Feldman sees McGregor as more likely to thrive in this gritty environment.

But here’s the million-dollar question, will McGregor and Mayweather leave their boxing gloves behind and step into a brutal bare-knuckle rematch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
