If there is something big happening in the world of MMA, you can be assured two things will follow- first, a Chael Sonnen video, and second, a Conor McGregor tweet. And the recent win of Justin Gaethje over Dustin Poirier is no exception to this rule.

At the main event of UFC 291, ‘Highlight’ finished ‘The Diamond’ with a second-round head kick. The former interim champion crowned himself the second person in the history of UFC to hold the BMF title after Jorge Masvidal. It is noteworthy that the BMF title has no history of defenses, but it looks like Conor McGregor would like to change that fact.

Before the dust of UFC 291 could settle, Conor McGregor has already called out Justin Gaethje. In one of his latest tweets, the Irishman declared himself as a “bad motherf***er”, thus discrediting the recent BMF title won by ‘Highlight’ and challenging him for the strap. The tweet translates to: “I’m a bad motherf***er. How are you?”

For those unaware, McGregor has been dismissive of the BMF title fight ever since its resurrection. In one of his earlier tweets, McGregor claimed himself to be the actual BMF, further asserting that any BMF title challenge that does not include him is not a real one. As of now, the fighter is yet to make a comeback, with expectations on him facing his fellow TUF coach, Michael Chandler.

But with this tweet, it looks like ‘Notorious’ has different plans. Before this, McGregor and Gaethje have never encountered each other inside the octagon. However, both of them have crossed swords with Dustin Poirier on multiple occasions. While McGregor beat Poirier in the first encounter, he lost the two other fights. On the contrary, Gaethje triumphed in the grudge match after getting finished the first time.

Is the BMF title a pathway to the title fight?

Ever since its inception, there has always been a question regarding the purpose of the BMF title. Does it serve as a pathway to a title fight like the interim title? At least that’s what happened in the case of Jorge Masvidal as ‘Gamebred’ fought Kamaru Usman after winning the BMF title.

If a similar trend is followed, Justin Gaethje will be next in line to fight for the Lightweight gold after Islam Makhachev vs. Charles Oliveira. There is also Alexander Volkanovski in the picture, who, according to many, deserves a rematch for his UFC 284 performance.
