The UFC game series by EA Sports has been a fan favorite for years. Gamers and MMA enthusiasts alike eagerly anticipate each new installment, ready to step into the virtual octagon and slug it out as their favorite fighters. However, lurking beneath the excitement and digital glory, there’s an intriguing and somewhat unsettling phenomenon – the UFC game curse.

From the very first game, anyone who featured on the cover seemed destined for an unfortunate twist of fate. Names like Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey, Israel Adesanya, and numerous other MMA giants have fallen prey to the sinister ‘curse’. This pattern has continued, making it more than a mere coincidence. As UFC 5 is on the horizon, it seems like the curse has reared its head once more!

The first UFC game came out on June 17, 2014, and received positive feedback from players around the world. UFC stars Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson were featured on the cover art of the game. This was after their epic battle at UFC 165, where Jones won via a close decision.

However, ‘Bones’ infamously failed the drug test of his very next fight, after the game was released. This happened after UFC 182 where the current UFC heavyweight champ faced Daniel Cormier. Moreover, Jones was stripped of his UFC light heavyweight title which he later recaptured.

Further, Gustafsson met a similar fate. Soon after the game launch, he faced Anthony Johnson at a UFC Fight Night event. Shockingly, ‘Rumble’ knocked him out in the very first round.

Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey’s downfall after being featured on UFC game cover

In the second edition of the UFC game, UFC 2, superstars Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey appeared on the cover art. The curse struck again, as Rousey lost her very next fight to Holly Holm. It still is remembered as one of the biggest upsets of the UFC. Further, her career went downhill afterward, and the UFC legend never recovered.

Things were not as bad for McGregor, but the Irishman still suffered the wrath of the curse. Soon after being featured on the cover, ‘The Notorious’ lost for the first time in the UFC against Nate Diaz.

But this wasn’t the end of problems for the Irishman. McGregor was featured once again on UFC 3’s cover. Fans loved the game, but it brought problems for UFC’s first double champ. Soon afterward, McGregor suffered the biggest defeat of his UFC career, against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Israel Adesanya was next in line!

The cover art of the fourth UFC game featured Israel Adesanya and Jorge Masvidal. Once again, history repeated itself as ‘Stylebender’ lost his first MMA fight after being featured on the game’s cover. Former UFC light heavyweight champ Jan Blachowicz defeated Adesanya at UFC 259 via a comfortable decision.

Now, as UFC 5 draws closer, the former UFC middleweight champ has featured on the game’s deluxe edition. Once again, troubles arose for ‘Stylebender’ as he shockingly lost to Sean Strickland at UFC 293. Jorge Masvidal, the face on UFC 4 wasn’t forgiven either! Just after being featured, Masvidal suffered his first MMA knockout loss against Kamaru Usman at UFC 261 and the three fights after that before he retired.

Alexander Volkanovski and Valentina Shevchenko – the latest preys!

UFC 5 features UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski and former UFC champ Valentina Shevchenko on its cover. As fans might have predicted, things did not go right for any of them after getting this esteemed feature. Shevchenko fought Alexa Grasso recently, and even after an impressive performance, she did not win the women’s flyweight title! The reason – this fight ended in a draw!
