Conor McGregor announced that he’ll let the world know exactly who he’s fighting and when on New Year’s Day. Talk about starting the year with a bang. The Irishman was crystal clear in his message. No trolling, no cryptic statements, with this kind of clarity, perhaps big talks about a fight are ongoing in the background.
I will be announcing my fight date and opponent on New Years Day, 2024.
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) December 30, 2023
Are you now excited for the coming year? McGregor is probably one of the biggest stars the UFC has to offer. And now, he’s finally back fully recovered. The catch however, could be in who McGregor will fight exactly. It is common knowledge that Michael Chandler is meant to be his next opponent.
But in truth, McGregor commands a will of his own in the business. If he decides to face someone else, the world of combat sports might just give someone else to him. We say combat sports because McGregor has also shown great interest in challenging boxing icon Manny Pacqiao.
In fact, ‘The Notorious’ has only laughed in the face of Michael Chandler every single time the idea of fighting him comes up. Quite recently, he pitched the idea of a Brazilian fighter Renato Moicano fighting him at UFC 300 instead. He even spelled Moicano’s name wrong for the kicks of it. So what is it going to be?

Is it all smoke and mirrors?
McGregor’s warfare is not merely physical, it’s immensely psychological as well. It is near impossible to forget the way he ate away at Jose Aldo’s mindset before ripping the title away from his grips with a 13-second knockout. He knows what he’s doing.

McGregor might just be playing Chess with Chandler. Teasing and joking about not fighting him. Wearing him down as if he doesn’t even take him seriously. It’s either that, or he’s spoken with Dana White to fight someone entirely different instead. However, is that move worth it? Fans will most likely feel disappointed as if a good show was canceled half way if McGregor actually ducks Chandler now. Who do you think his real opponent will be?
