Conor McGregor is about to fight Michael Chandler in UFC 303 and is training for it every day. Meanwhile, he has also declared a challenge to Dustin Poirier who is set to fight Islam Makhachev in UFC 302 lightweight clash. McGregor thinks that Poirier can knock out Makhachev! The Dagestani fighter had become champion two years ago and now he is a huge favorite going into the octagon. Makhachev is even confident of his victory as he plans to exploit the Diamond’s weakness, which is his grappling.

However, ‘The Notorious’ is confident that Poirier, who has defeated McGregor twice, will emerge victorious again because of his striking prowess. While many believed that the 35-year-old’s judgment had to do something with his rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov, UFC insider spilled beans about how Poirier’s victory can make it easier for ‘Mystic Mac’ to get to the title shot.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uncle Chael chimed in on why McGregor will be rooting for Poirier to become the new champion. He believes that the McGregor vs Poirier fight was pretty plausible. Now as per Sonnen, if the Irishman wins against Chandler, then McGregor can go for the title boutHe even pointed out how fans might think it was unfair if McGregor walked right into the title shot without a fight, but if he beat Michael Chandler, then no one would consider it an unfair call.

He gave the plausible scenario and revealed, “So I could give you a very clear path for Conor to fight for the belt. It just has to do with Islam dropping his strap to Dustin. If Islam loses to Dustin.” Sonnen did mention that all these were “what ifs but still very plausible. He said, “It is more likely to happen if Poirier wins.”

McGregor might already know this little secret that Sonnen is explaining because he predicted that Poirier might win. ‘Mystic Mac’s’ conversation about it on the media might fuel Poirier to win the fight even more, even if he does not want a rematch with the 35-year-old. On the other hand, Islam Makhachev seems open to fighting McGregor despite the latter’s decline.

Islam Makhachev wants to fight Conor Mcgregor

In a recent episode of Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo’s ‘Pound 4 Pound’ podcast, the Dagestani answered that he was willing to fight ‘The Notorious’. He said, “People have to be stupid to say no,” maybe because of the huge paydays that get from fighting MMA’s top star. The Russian fighter might want to fight him, but he did point out Conor McGregor does not hold the same power now.

The lightweight champ felt that McGregor was a great fighter when he fought Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. However, he was not the same after he made some lifestyle choices and changed his game. “Brother, when will I fight next? October or November. I can fight August or September with McGregor. Same night brother, easy. This guy not same. I don’t want to him look bad, but everybody know this guy not same [fighter he was] before. Yeah, for sure when he was fighting with Khabib, he’s in the good shape, you know he is a high-level fighter. But right now, it’s too much alcohol, too much whiskey and it’s not the same,” Makhachev said.

While the Dubliner might have fallen from the mid-2010 glory, which saw him as a two-division champion, he still holds a good stature in the MMA world. Now we have to see whether McGregor wins the UFC 303 bout and gets Poirier or Makhachev. Who do you want to see the 35-year-old fight next? Drop your pick in the comment section.
