Conor McGregor will make his acting debut in the upcoming remake of the 1989 classic ‘Road House’, which released worldwide on March 21. And the Irishman (along with the rest of the cast) is on a media blitz to promote the movie.

As part of this, the former UFC two-division champion took to Instagram and tried a unique marketing strategy. Hollywood heart-throb, Sydney Sweeney posted pictures on her Instagram account to promote her upcoming film, ‘Immaculate’. The Irishman took to the comments section of this post and hijacked it in typical ‘Notorious’ fashion, commenting “@roadhousemovie March 21st”  to promote the Doug Liman-directed film.

Speaking to ‘ET’ about the unconventional marketing tactic, McGregor refuted charges of trash-talking Sweeney and insisted he “was not talking smack on her.” The former two-division UFC champion felt that the star was “doing a lot of great things lately,” and had high praise for her recent Saturday Night Live appearance.

“She follows me, so I follow her. I’m a fan. She’s doing very good,” McGregor said. “I thought she was amazing on Saturday Night Live. I love Saturday Night Live [and] that was one of the better ones in years.” While the move may have rubbed some the wrong way, ‘Barstool Sports’ used this to discuss the ‘marketing genius’ of Conor McGregor, and shed light on why he seemingly has the ability to strike gold with whatever he touches.

Conor McGregor has broken records in the various things he has tried his hands at. After becoming the highest-paid MMA fighter, he fought Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match in 2017 and became the highest-paid boxing debutante of all time. He then set up a whiskey business, whose majority stakes he and his partners reportedly sold for $600 million. Now, he has claimed to be the highest-paid first-time actor of all time.

The article points out that the reason McGregor has been able to move from strength to strength is because of his business and promotional savvy, calling him a “marketing genius”.

Now, the former UFC champion is setting up for his Hollywood debut project, ‘Road House’. He has claimed that he has become the highest-paid first-time actor, reportedly being paid £4 million for the film. And reports suggest that his excellent marketing sense is exemplified by his decision to comment on Sweeney’s post, as he understood that the actress is one of the most popular figures on the internet at the moment. However, many fans were not convinced by this, while some agreed with the take.

Clearly, while most fans do agree that McGregor is a marketing genius, most of them are not on board with the Irishman’s comment on Sweeney’s Instagram post being quite a genius move. However, his move to take advantage of Sydney Sweeney’s popularity, even if not very helpful to the promotion of his film as some fans have pointed out, certainly shows that the Irishman has the right instincts and reflexes when it comes to marketing. And given the incredible things McGregor has achieved in his life, it is difficult to argue that he is not a marketing genius. What do you think about McGregor’s comment?
