Is Johnny Walker's move to AKA a betrayal to Conor McGregor or a smart career choice?

The world of mixed martial arts has stayed still with eyes gaping wide as Johnny Walker seemingly joined Khabib Nurmagomedov’s training camp. Walker has faced nothing but defeats in the last couple of his fights. Now, the Brazilian mixed martial artist has taken a giant step to upgrade his fighting prowess by training with the Dagestani team at the AKA gym.

There was a time when Walker trained at Conor McGregor’s camp under the guidance of the Straight Blast Gym’s head coach, John Kavanagh. And fight fans aren’t oblivious to the volcanic heat that emanates from the rivalry between ‘The Notorious’ and the Dagestani legend. Undoubtedly, the MMA realm never expected someone from McGregor’s team to train under Nurmagomedov’s guidance.

Back in April 2024, Kavanagh took to X and commended the Dagestani team’s practice of punishing the fighters who violated the hairstyle uniformity. To the world’s surprise, the SBG head coach even opted to bring that Dagestani tradition to Ireland. Many fans seemed to believe that it was targeted toward Walker, who is infamous for his long curly hair. But they didn’t suspect him shifting to the AKA gym.

Going against McGregor to train at the American Kickboxing Academy was a pretty big move for Walker. Some of the fans made a reference to Dillon Danis training with Alex Pereira, instead of ‘The Notorious’. One of the comments read, “Conor is losing everybody.” But given the former UFC double champion’s habit of lashing out on X, the fighting community expected the Irishman to drop down some rageful words. One fan wrote, “Connor defs gonna be tweeting about Jonny once his on the nose candy.” Meanwhile, another fan claimed that the SBG gym was made for losers, pointing at McGregor’s failure to make a comeback to the Octagon. The comment read, “he understood u cant get anything from losers camp ..”
