Love him or hate him, just like his moniker suggests, Colby Covington never fails to bring the ‘Chaos’ inside and outside the Octagon when he competes. The former interim champion is notoriously known for giving his opponents and other fighters horrible nicknames, but how did he get his own nickname, ‘Chaos’?

Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards (21-3) is set to take on Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington (17-3) at UFC 296. The two welterweights will most likely have to put up the performances of their lifetime to beat the other, especially with this possibly being Covington’s last shot at the title. The 35-year-old will need to bring in all the chaos if he wants to stand a chance at retaining the belt. As all eyes shift to Covington, let us take a look at how the two-time welterweight title challenger earned his nickname.

Colby Covington is known for his intense pace and cardio inside the Octagon, which aligns with Covington’s fight moniker of ‘Chaos’. He has smothered many of his opponents with sheer pressure and simply outpacing them during contests. Covington once revealed how he got his nickname in an old interview.

In the interview, the Clovis native revealed how he was ‘chaotic’ as a child. He stated, “As a kid, I just had so much energy. I was running around the house a lot and I just always wanted to play sports all day long. I could just never sit still on the couch.”

Covington went to say how his mother tried to keep him still. He said, “She’d always try and give me more still and you know work on some math, work on some science. I’m like Mom no, I just like to be running free, I just want to be out there playing sports so. She’s like yeah, you’re name’s chaos.”

Looking at it from that angle, Covington hasn’t changed much. His insane cardio and pace were most likely ingrained in him from a very young age. However, something he picked up from the UFC is his incredible talent for giving other fighters their nicknames.

Colby Covington is undeniably one of the top welterweights in the UFC. He also might just be one of the best heels the sport of MMA has ever witnessed. One thing he’s amazing at, other than his wrestling and cardio, is his ability to get under others’ skin. He pairs it up with a creative talent of giving nicknames to fighters and even referees.

Covington termed Usman as, ‘The CEO of EPO,’ and ‘Marty Fakenewsman’ as he accused Kamaru Usman of taking PEDs. He termed Dustin Poirier as “Dustbin Poirier’ and ‘Dustin Soirier’ and Jorge Masvial as “Street Judas”. Even UFC referee, Mark Goddard was a victim as he was named “Mark not so Gooddard” as Covington criticized his officiating at his first fight against Kamaru Usman.
