Colby Covington will be making his return to the Octagon at UFC 296 after a hiatus from competition since his fight against Jorge Masvidal in 2022. ‘Chaos’ has his eyes set on Leon Edwards’s undisputed welterweight title, an accolade that has eluded him twice in the past in losses against Kamaru Usman. Despite his lack of undisputed UFC gold, Daniel Cormier clarified just how impressive Covington’s achievements in his combat sports career truly are.

In his statement, Cormier acknowledged Covington’s overachievement in MMA. Despite lacking standout attributes, Cormier, a former UFC ‘champ-champ’, marveled at Covington’s success.

Cormier noted Covington’s non-exceptional physical traits but highlighted his accomplishments by revealing, “He’s not the biggest, he’s not the fastest, he’s not the strongest. But, he wins. With those abilities, he has become a two-time NCAA All-American, he has been the UFC interim champion, he’s fought for the belt two times, and he’s fighting for the belt another time.

Describing Covington’s fighting style as “meat and potatoes,” Cormier emphasized his work ethic, volume, and cardio as distinguishing factors. He stated, “As meat and potatoes as it gets. Volume and cardio, but that all comes with hard work.”

The former champion conveyed that while Covington may not be an athlete who can jump higher or run faster than anybody, he has still managed to cement himself as one of the top competitors in the UFC. An achievement that illustrates how far his work ethic and commitment have gotten him against the best in the sport.

And despite Covington’s trash talk and antics outside the Octagon, his upcoming opponent ‘Rocky’, has stated that he has just one goal in mind when they step into the cage against one another!

‘Rocky’ wants to silence Covington and his trash talk

Leon Edwards has expressed excitement about silencing Covington, emphasizing his determination to defend the title. Speaking with Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports, Edwards pointed out perceived weaknesses in Covington’s recent opponents, describing them as “over the hill.” He also stated that fans should not be too quick to judge his cardio and pace against Covington’s past opponents.

Despite acknowledging Covington’s cardio reputation, Edwards believes it’s based on fights against older competitors. Confident in his abilities, Edwards asserted, “I’m excited to go out there and shut him up. He’s a good talker so I’m going to go out there, shut him up and continue my reign,” thus expressing motivation to outperform his opponent.
