Colby Covington’s coaches suggested that ‘Chaos’ has an opponent in mind, after his bout with Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal, at UFC 272 PPV. The number one ranked UFC welterweight has already competed twice against the welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman. Though both bouts were close, Covington fell short in his attempt to grab the UFC’s welterweight championship.

In an interview with Sherdog Brazilian correspondent Marcelo Alonso, MMA Masters’ head coaches Cesar Carneiro and Daniel Valverde revealed Colby Covington’s potential next opponent.

Coach Daniel Valverde said, “He really wants to fight Dustin Poirier. You know they have a personal problem. And Colby told us many times, coach, that’s the fight that I like. That’s the fight that I wanna have. I really hope UFC put this fight together.”

Valverde added that the UFC will benefit from the fight as it would be another grudge match that would do well in generating PPV. Also, the coach pointed out that competitively; the fight is very interesting.

“I heard that Dustin Poirier is going to 170. I don’t know, I’m not sure. But I’m pretty sure that, that’s the fight Colby wants,” concluded the coach.

Even though Colby Covington wants Dustin Poirier next, ‘The Diamond’ doesn’t believe a fight between him and Covington will happen inside the octagon.

Though Poirier doesn’t want to fight Covington, the fight is too big for UFC to not explore. Also, considering Poirier has suggested a move up to welterweight, a fight with Covington would be a potential path for Poirier to get to the welterweight championship.

Dustin Poirier and Colby Covington: Who has the edge?

Keeping aside all the drama, the fight itself is a tough matchup for Poirier. Covington uses high volume and pressures his opponents with his impressive wrestling, and this is the style that Poirier has suffered to beat. Charles Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov already used their superior grappling to beat Poirier, thus Poirier will look to improve on this front.

Poirier might accept a fight with Covington to achieve his goal of winning a UFC championship. Not only Covington, but Kamaru Usman also has a similar style. Thus, Poirier has a tough road to the UFC championship in the welterweight division if he ever moves up a division.
