Colby Covington is firing shots left, right, and center. Is it necessary for only Leon Edwards to be the target? No, not at all. It looks like all the champions are on his hit list. And currently, he’s looking at none other than the lightweight champion of the UFC, Islam Makhachev.

Covington’s interviews are as notorious as they always come. So, this time, when he wasn’t taking shots at Edwards for a little while, he chose Makhachev instead. He’s called out the fighter before, but they’re weight classes apart. What’s his motivation here? Here’s what Covington said.

While Covington going off on certain fighters is nothing new, this time, perhaps Makhachev caught a stray bullet. Covington actually started his mini-rant by taking shots at Khamzat Chimaev. He spoke about the time Chimaev couldn’t make weight and accused him of running away from the welterweight division.

And then he got on with the idea of insulting Makhachev’s pound-for-pound status because both Chimaev and Makhachev are Russian fighters. While their styles may seem rather similar, the two have completely different personalities and weight classes. Perhaps it was the weight ordeal that bothered Covington.

“All those guys from Russia, they suck at fighting. Islam Makhachev as well,” he said. “He’s a bum you know, he’s number one pound for pound on my n*ts, he couldn’t sniff the title if he fought my weight class. He’s a weight bully. that’s why he fights all that weight so this fight needs to go down with either Khamzat or Islam.”

Covington clearly doesn’t shy away from challenging other fighters. Chimaev hasn’t really spoken much about re-entering the welterweight division and has gotten into a beef with the likes of middleweight champion Sean Strickland. So it looks like the only real opponent Covington has to worry about is Leon Edwards.

Covington vs. Edwards

Colby Covington has been in character for this fight like any other. Except perhaps this time he’s even more himself so to speak. His rants and call-outs have been reckless and unforgiving. However, is it working? Leon Edwards often appears as calm as a cucumber during his interviews. While ‘Chaos’ is almost about to burst into flames within his.

But does persona matter in the cage? Covington is a brilliant pressure fighter, while very few can come close to the power and technique of Leon Edwards. ‘Rocky’ has claimed that Covington won’t be able to punish him with cardio, and it looks like he’s trained for it too. Will the trash talk turn into a win? Only time will tell.
