Ian Garry has a complaint to make. He has even kept receipts about a certain matchup and is accusing Colby Covington who the matchup was made against. The top-10 ranked welterweight has emails showing the fight offer and his immediate acceptance. However, it looks like ‘Chaos’ who had previously even insulted Garry’s wife Layla, is silent this time. This news has come straight from the undefeated Irishman’s mouth as he posted a long video on Instagram.
‘The Future’ addressed his predicament as to why he did not get the chance to fight Covington, blaming the latter for his silence. He said, “What’s up everyone, I am coming to let everybody know; keep everybody in the loop and keep everyone updated because it matters. A month ago, I was offered a fight with Colby Covington. It took me all of 20 seconds to respond to the email saying ‘Yes I am in’. A month later we’ve still got no response from Colby. He is avoiding me like the plague, there’s one reason and one reason only this fight is not happening and his name is Colby Covington.” Will Covington answer to this blame?

The surging UFC welterweight prospect even declared in the past that he was supposed to fight Colby Covington at UFC 303. However, he faced Michael Page and won the bout via unanimous decision. Something similar to what happened recently had also conspired during UFC 303. Garry had shared the whole ordeal with the MMA Hour. “I’ll send you the email. I was offered the fight,” Garry said on The MMA Hour. “I was offered the fight, I was offered it June 29, UFC 303, Ian Machado Garry vs. Colby Covington. I responded back to that and said yes. I had multiple calls with the UFC, multiple back and forths with the UFC about why it hasn’t been accepted, why it hasn’t been pushed, why it’s not happening.”
He even speculated for any other reason like a medical one, but all seemed fine. So eventually the Dubliner concluded that ‘Chaos’ was avoiding him. It is surprising given the fact that Covington targeted Garry’s wife Layla during his interviews before his fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 296. He previously even suggested that he wanted Gary’s wife to ‘get on her hands and knees’ to plead for a fight against him. This personal attack made Garry more willing to fight Covington. However, even if Covington is silent, the UFC CEO was not because he had dropped a massive update!

An update conveyed by MMA Orbit on X said that, “Dana White says they discussed Ian Machado Garry’s next fight in their matchmaker meeting today. He says there are a few names on the table, one being Colby Covington but they haven’t decided who they’re going with yet.” The UFC head honcho had pacified the storm of excitement during the recent DWCS post-fight presser as well. The reporters asked him to share his thoughts on UFC 310 and who he thought would headline the event. The boss was tight-lipped about any matchups but stated, “It’s a fun card. It’s a really, really good card. We’ll let you know soon.”

Days later, the CEO announced Belal Muhammad vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov for the welterweight title to headline the final PPV of 2024. So the 170 lbs division will be in the spotlight in Vegas, and Garry and Covington would do well to take some of that shine for themselves. Covington has a habit of angling for title fights solely based on high-profile wins instead of high-ranking wins. Garry brings the type of attention that could perhaps see Covington into a title conversation once again.
But Colby’s silence has the UFC reportedly looking for other options. Rumors state Ian Garry vs. Sean Brady is another welterweight clash the UFC matchmakers are eyeing. If ‘Chaos’ had his way, he would have fought Stephen Thompson following the former’s unsuccessful UFC 296 outing. ‘Wonderboy’ has not won in a fight in nearly two years and is on a 2-fight skid. Most recently he lost to Joaquin Buckley at UFC 307. This leaves Covington with few viable options that translate to a title opportunity.

Garry is pretty clear that he wants to fight against Covington and even enlisted his young son to impersonate Covington and call the latter out. ‘Machado’ captioned the post, “From the kid that brought you the greatest fighter impressions comes a brand new one – The Colby Covington”, Garry asks his son, Leo, “Leo what does Colby Covington do?” Garry Jr ran away from the camera indicating how the American is running away from their matchup. Even so, the silence from welterweight is deafening. The boss might keep things under wraps and Covington might be silent for now, but fans cannot help speculate. Some are even guessing that there could be a grudge match at 170 lbs against Dustin Poirier! Will UFC 310 see Garry vs. Covington or are they going to fight someone else?
