We are inching closer to UFC 296 as people are already starting to make their predictions. UFC legend Chael Sonnen posted a video on his YouTube channel. He imagined what the scenario would be if Colby Covington defeated Leon Edwards to become champion. As such, Sonnen believes that ‘Chaos’ could work together with Islam Makhachev to make their big-money fight a reality.

Colby Covington and Islam Makhachev do not have the best relationship with each other. Both fighters have taken shots at each other during interviews while also expressing an urge to fight each other. This is where Chael Sonnen came in and proposed an idea for Covington and the reigning lightweight champion.

Chael Sonnen suggests Covington and Makhachev could help each other

‘The American Gangster’ discussed the money side of UFC fights in his recent YouTube video. He mentions how numbers make a fight big, not how good the fighters actually are. The more people tune in, the more money fighters and promoters make. Chael Sonnen said, “One thing that is very hard is the fact that there is power in numbers.”

He further mentioned that both Colby Covington and Islam Makhachev have a huge following. They can use that as a tool to help each other earn more while also fighting each other for the title. “If Colby and Islam begin to help each other [and] to help that fight to happen, it’s a powerful thing,” Chael Sonnen added. However, there is also a possibility that the UFC might miss out on this potential fight.

MMA legend claims UFC has to set up the stage to add more fuel

Chael Sonnen mentioned that he’s only talking about a potential Makhachev vs. Covington fight because there is a chance that it might just happen. However, Islam Makhachev has to be there when and if ‘Chaos’ wins the title, according to Sonnen. He said, “It could perhaps play out. And no matter how much Islam and Colby want to fight, if we find out that Islam is in San Jose or back in Dagestan, if he’s not in the building, take it away. It’s a nothing.”

The MMA legend stressed the fact that the UFC will never get a better chance to promote the fight than having Islam Makhachev there in the T-Mobile Arena at UFC 296. If not, then the chance to make it a big-money fight will be missed. “Nothing they [The UFC] can do through social media that will be as big of a spot as there,” Chael Sonnen added.

The UFC is never opposed to a fight that will have more people tuning in and talking about it. And to do that, there aren’t any better contenders than Colby Covington and Islam Makahachev. We will have to wait and see if ‘Chaos’ breaks the undefeated run of Leon Edwards to find himself challenging the Dagestani champion.
