Dana White, the fans, analysts, everybody else and their grandma wants to see heavyweight champ Jon Jones fight interim champ Tom Aspinall next. The only problem? Jon Jones himself! After all, the consensus MMA GOAT was totally against the idea of facing the Englishman before UFC 309 last month.

Since then, perhaps seeing that he has no other option, ‘Bones’ has finally come around. If and only if he gets “f**k you money” to do so, which some fear may just be a slick way for the New Mexico resident to price himself out of fighting the interim champ. Including, apparently, UFC superstar Colby Covington, who sat down for an interview ahead of his UFC Tampa clash against Joaquin Buckley this weekend. On being asked by Chael Sonnen what he thought about a Jones-Aspinall clash, ‘Chaos’ had some very choice words for ‘Bones’.

“There’s no other option, Jon’s going to vacate the title. Everybody knows he’s scared of Aspinall. Aspinall would starch him and leave him in a pool of his own blood. So just like he ducked Ngannou for three years when Ngannou was on top, he didn’t want to fight him. He knows it’s a bad match-up with Aspinall as well. So I think he vacates the title before unifying the title,” Covington said in the ESPN MMA interview on YouTube.

“He [Jones] has such a big ego that he’s not going to risk having that shattered… He’s a big feelings guy so he doesn’t want to give this up-and-comer a chance to take everything he’s worked for,” the former interim 170lbs champ added.

The fan sentiment does seem to agree with ‘Chaos’. After all, ‘Bones’ sat out three years when Francis Ngannou was the heavyweight champ, only to have his first heavyweight fight as soon as ‘The Predator’ left the promotion. Further, the reason many feel Jones is so reluctant to fight Aspinall is because of how dangerous the Englishman is. A generational talent like Aspinall, the interim champ has a remarkably well-rounded game, as dangerous on the feet as he is on the ground- also just like Jones.

In addition, Aspinall being a natural heavyweight is bigger than Jones and has mind-boggling speed for his size. Not to mention he is younger, hungrier, and wants to prove himself as the best in the world. This is why most are hoping that the UFC pays ‘Bones’ through the nose. Otherwise, it would be very simple for Jones to refuse, claiming the UFC was low-balling him. On the other hand, Aspinall isn’t very concerned about facing Jones.

Tom Aspinall’s surprising take on fighting Jon Jones

What’s your perspective on:

Is Jon Jones dodging Tom Aspinall out of fear, or is it all about the money?

Have an interesting take?

There is not a smidgen of a doubt that Tom Aspinall wants to fight Jon Jones. But he isn’t very concerned if that fight doesn’t happen. Why? Well, because Aspinall doesn’t care about his legacy. The Englishman just wants to be acknowledged as currently the best heavyweight mixed martial artist in the world.

“In all honesty, I’ve not really got any interest in being the best heavyweight ever… I’m not bothered about legacy, I just feel like I’m the best heavyweight in the world and I want people to recognize it. That’s it,” Aspinall told the ‘VechtersBazen podcast’.

Of course, one of the reasons Jones doesn’t want to fight Aspinall, and floated Alex Pereira’s name instead is because he doesn’t think Aspinall will do much for his legacy. After all, ‘Bones’ will risk his essentially perfect record in an Aspinall fight. But on the other hand, Jones has perhaps underestimated the fan backlash he will get if he doesn’t fight Aspinall. The way things are going right now, ducking Aspinall will be worse for Jones’ legacy than losing to the Englishman. What do you think about Covington’s take on a potential Jon Jones-Tom Aspinall clash?
