‘Rocky’ has been on a winning streak since his last defeat against Kamaru Usman back in 2015 and has already defended his title twice against the best fighters of the promotion. So what’s next for the English champion? Well, as per Edwards, he is now ready to take on the Canadian superstar’s record.

Leon Edwards is looking to oust GSP’s record

With a career record of 26 victories and 2 defeats, there’s hardly any fighter in the history of the promotion who has achieved what Georges St-Pierre has achieved in his lifetime. The Canadian fighter was the best talent that came out of Montreal, Quebec soil. GSP became the two-division champion, as well as successfully defended his title 12 times in his career.

It’s difficult to get past this record, however, Edwards is planning to do exactly that. At the pre-fight press conference Edwards was asked about his opinion on his upcoming fight and the welterweight champ has only one thing to say, “He’s just another guy in the way, right? I’m chasing the great GSP’s record because he is another opponent in the way.”

The only fighter who was ever close to ousting GSP’s record in the welterweight division was Kamaru Usman, however, Leon Edwards surpassed ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ when they first faced back in 2022 and their second clash on UFC 286 was the testament that ‘Rocky’ is the only one who has what it takes to get past Georges St-Pierre’s record.

So how close is Edwards to breaking GSP’s record? Well, as of now, he is a bit far from even putting a dent in the Canadian’s name. However, he is surely reaching there. Interestingly, he is just one win away from standing next to the GSP winning streak record. Edwards needs the victory badly, and he is sure of his win.

‘Rocky’ is sure about his victory

What’s your perspective on:

Is Leon Edwards' fight with Belal Muhammad more about personal beef or breaking records?

Have an interesting take?

Leon Edwards wants to surpass GSP but for Muhammad, it is not about surpassing but about clinching the belt. While having a conversation with the media, Muhammad stated that should he clinch the victory against Edwards at UFC 304, then he should stand equal to GSP. As ridiculous as this might sound Muhammad actually said it when asked about his match.

Such a statement was taken into consideration by the welterweight champion, who responded to Muhammad’s words by giving him a rough reality check. “Everyone knows his gameplan will be to come out and try wrestling. But even his wrestling, it ain’t all that. He ain’t f**king Khabib [Nurmagomedov] or GSP, he’s Belal. Let’s see,” said Edwards.

With just mere moments left for their final clash, who do you think would clinch the victory? Will it be another successful title defense for Edwards or are we going to witness a new champion? State your thoughts in the comments below.
