The UFC’s welterweight division has been on fire lately with some of the most exciting fighters in the sport competing at the highest level. The most recent event, UFC 286, saw Leon Edwards defend his welterweight title against Kamaru Usman in a thrilling match. The fight left fans on the edge of their seats.
However, it was the post-fight press conference that stole the headlines. Dana White had previously announced that Colby Covington would be the next title challenger for the welterweight belt. Covington was also the backup fighter for Edwards vs Usman. However, Edwards seems to have different plans.

Edwards was asked about his next title challenger in the post-fight interview of UFC 286. He did not express much interest in fighting Colby Covington as he thought ‘Chaos’ had not fought enough to get a title shot. Instead, he said that his next opponent should be Jorge Masvidal.
“Pay-per-view wise I’ll probably go with Masvidal. If he beats Burns, that’s the fight to make”. Edwards went on to question why Covington should get a title shot when he had been inactive for a year, while he had to work hard for 12 fights to earn his title shot.
Masvidal‘s upcoming fight against Gilbert Burns is an enormous opportunity for him to earn a title shot against Edwards.
Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal rivalry
Edwards‘ comments about Masvidal are interesting, as the two have a long-standing rivalry. Their feud dates back to 2019 when the American and Edwards were engaged in a backstage brawl. Masvidal was giving in an interview when Edwards passed by and allegedly made a remark that did not go well with Masvidal.
The brawl left the current UFC welterweight champion with a bruise on the face. Edwards and Masvidal were scheduled to fight each other at UFC 269, but the Miami-born fighter opted out due to an undisclosed injury. It seems like Edwards has not forgotten about it and wants to get his revenge on Masvidal.
