Can Max Holloway finally conquer Dustin Poirier, or is he setting himself up for another defeat?

“That’d be nice. ‘The Diamond’. Sign me up, bro.” Well, that’s exactly what Max Holloway said when a reporter brought up the idea of him being Dustin Poirier’s retirement fight during the press conference after UFC 308. Of course, the fight would be wagered with the BMF title on the line. Needless to say, Holloway wanting to match up against Poirier, someone who already has 2 wins over him, created quite an uproar in the fighting community. It even impressed the former UFC contender, Chael Sonnen

Taking to his talk show, ‘The American Gangster’ lifted ‘Blessed’ up high. He said, “I feel like I gotta remind people that Max is champion right now. It’s a championship that we as a community would really like to have a lineage.” He kept his emphasis on Holloway direly needing to call someone out to extend the lineage for the BMF belt. Because in case he doesn’t call anyone out, he will spiral into a great mess.

Sonnen continued, “You go after Dustin Poirier, who’s already beat you twice. It shows some massive courage. Right now, Max is going after a guy who stubbed him twice. If it doesn’t end up being Dustin Poirier, who is it going to be? I mean, when Max called out Dustin, it showed for the first time he didn’t mind calling somebody out.”

‘The Bad Guy’ also pointed out that Holloway never really called Ilia Topuria out for a title fight. Back when he asked for a shot at the title, Topuria and Alexander Volkanovski were yet to clash against each other. Weighing in on this, Sonnen said, “He didn’t care. He wanted that belt. But now, for the first time that I ever recall, Max has said a name. And he’s said the name of Dustin Poirier. You don’t have to try to win us over when it comes to you having courage and you being willing to compete with the best.” However, when it came to the lightweight division, ‘The American Gangster’ reminded Max Holloway that it’d be pretty hard. He said, “But at a 155 pounds, make no mistake, there is no easy fight.”

Poirier would not be the first opponent for Holloway who has beaten him twice before. The same was the case with Alexander Volkanovski. Their trilogy bout was one of the most one-sided beatings Holloway ever took. Is there a chance Poirier will dole out something similar, especially since the fight will likely only happen at 155? And Dustin Poirier seems eager for it. Despite hinting at retirement, and taking up the role of an analyst, ‘The Diamond’ did seem pretty excited about a fight against Holloway.

The talks about matching Poirier and Holloway have been treading long paths on social media. But even though the former lightweight interim champion seemingly announced his retirement back at UFC 302, he later revealed he might lace up the gloves once or twice again. Now, he is up for one final fight against ‘Blessed’. As he stumbled upon a fan’s proposal regarding the fight, Poirier reacted to it on X, and wrote, “Last Dance.”

However, there’s a catch! Poirier wanted Dana White and Co. to organize a 4-man BMF tournament, with the last man standing becoming the champion. As per the proposal, the tournament would feature Justin Gaethje, Dan Hooker, Holloway, and Poirier himself. To add to the excitement, ‘The Hangman’ also sided with the former interim champ’s idea. All that the fighting community needs to do now, is wait and watch.
