Is Merab Dvalishvili dodging Umar Nurmagomedov a smart move or a sign of fear?

Umar Nurmagomedov‘s stunning victory over Cory Sandhagen at UFC’s first-ever Saudi Arabia event sent shockwaves through the bantamweight division. His dominant performance catapulted him up eight ranks, positioning him as the #2 contender and fueling his belief that he’s next in line for a title shot. With his relentless rise, Nurmagomedov is confident he’s earned his place at the top.

But not everyone is on board with that idea. Top-ranked contender Merab Dvalishvili, known as ‘The Machine,’ has outright dismissed Nurmagomedov’s claim to a title shot. “He only beat Cory Sandhagen from the top 15,” Dvalishvili fired back. “Only one guy. Why does he deserve to fight for the belt?

This brewing tension has sparked a heated debate among fans and fighters alike, with even former fighter-turned-analyst Chael Sonnen weighing in on the controversy. As the bantamweight division heats up, the question remains: Is Nurmagomedov ready for a shot at the title, or does Dvalishvili have a point in questioning his fast rise? One thing’s for sure—the bantamweight landscape has never been more electrifying, and this rivalry could be the spark that ignites it further.

Chael Sonnen supported Merab Dvalishvili’s critique of Nurmagomedov’s title shot

Merab Dvalishvili is currently preparing to face division king Sean O’Malley at the upcoming UFC 306: Riyadh Season Noche during Mexican Independence Week. Regardless of the fight’s outcome, Dvalishvili has raised doubts about Umar Nurmagomedov’s eligibility for a title shot. In support of this Chael Sonnen shared his thoughts in a recent YouTube video, stating, “Though Nurmagomedov has done everything right, winning every fight and meeting all expectations expect for missing weight a few times, Merab is letting us know his stance.”

Sonnen further clarified The Machine’s intention, stating, “He’s letting us know that if he becomes champion, the very first thing he’s called upon to do, he won’t do. In fact, he’s even going to say Nurmagomedov’s name because he’s not the rightful guy.” According to Dvalishvili, he supports UFC veteran and #5 contender Deiveson Figueiredo for a title shot against Umar Nurmagomedov, citing Figueiredo’s extensive career and current status in the twilight of his fighting journey.

Even though Merab Dvalishvili has dismissed Umar Nurmagomedov as a title contender, Nurmagomedov doesn’t share the same view. Recently, he took a dig at Dvalishvili on social media, highlighting what he perceived as Dvalishvili’s insecurity about facing him.
