Cain Velasquez was once asked to do ‘1000’ kicks
Chael Sonnen mentions that he heard a story about Cain Velasquez, which has never died down. The story is about the first day Velasquez visited the American Kickboxing Academy. Sonnen said, “There’s a story, and it has never died down. Cain Velasquez goes into AKA [American Kickboxing Academy]. He’s trying to introduce himself or get the attention of Javier Mendez.”
Javier Mendez is a well-known coach who has trained fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Daniel Cormier, BJ Penn, and more. Sonnen mentions that Mendez was occupied that day with some of the other fighters in the gym. But Velasquez was persistent. He says, “Javier is working with somebody when this guy [Velasquez] is coming over trying to talk to him.”

Javier Mendez wanted to pay attention to him, but he didn’t want to ignore the other fighter. “The third time that he comes back and interrupts Javier, he tells this guy ‘go kick that bag 1000 times and then come see me,” said Sonnen. Velasquez then went on to proceed with what Mendez had asked of him and started kicking the punching bag. Although not exactly sure, Sonnen believes the story was around that incident.
