Can Conor McGregor still dominate the UFC, or are his glory days behind him?

With Conor McGregor desperate for a date to fight Michael Chandler, preferably this year, Chael Sonnen has some inside scoop on the topic. ‘Mac’, of course, had to pull out of his UFC 303 booking against Chandler due to a broken toe. And since then he’s been positively begging Dana White for a 2024 booking, which the UFC CEO has flatly refused.

However, UFC analyst and former superstar Chael Sonnen has claimed that ‘Mac’ will not get his wish of fighting on top of UFC 310 this December. Instead, he will get the next best thing – a January 2025 UFC 311 booking against Chandler, according to ‘Uncle Chael’. “An inside scoop that I’m getting is that the UFC wants all of those same things [McGregor vs. Chandler] they just wanted in January in California. I mean it sounds like you got to know who you’re going to believe, right,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.

In addition, the verbose UFC analyst was amazed at the popularity McGregor continues to enjoy among fans, despite the Irishman’s sharp decline in form and long lay-off.  So we’ve never quite been in a situation like this and I do have to wonder what is this fight about I was blown away with the evidence that Conor McGregor- top draw, red panty night- is still in full effect,” he said.

What Sonnen is talking about is the fact that UFC 303, when it was to be headlined by McGregor, had become the highest-grossing gate event in UFC history! And what really struck ‘Uncle Chael’ was that ‘Mac’ achieved this feat despite having no real stakes to fight like a championship, a contendership, or being as heated as things were between McGregor and some of his other opponents, say Khabib.

And that partly is why Sonnen is convinced that Dana White is as eager to see ‘Mac’ back in the octagon as the fans. And with the UFC CEO having already teased an announcement, fans will not have to wait much for the announcement.

Dana White promises Conor McGregor fight  date announcement ‘soon’

Dana White recently teased that news about McGregor’s much-awaited comeback fight is “coming soon.” And McGregor, too has taken to social media, giving Dana White a shoutout ahead of his fight announcement. Of course, many are expecting that the Irishman has finally convinced White to let him fight in December on UFC 310, which is the only date available for McGregor-Chandler.

All the rest of the UFC fight cards until UFC 308 have already been officially announced by Dana White and co. And while the main event UFC 309 in November hasn’t been announced yet, it is reported that the date is reserved for a heavyweight title clash between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic.

However, if Sonnen is correct, McGregor will make his much-awaited comeback on UFC 311 in January 2025, any details of which, including where it would be held, remains unknown at the moment, but not for long. What are your thoughts on Chael Sonnen’s revelations about Conor McGregor’s comeback bout?
