There was a lot of hype around Jon Jones making his return to the Octagon at UFC 285 and it did disappoint. He made quick work of Ciryl Gane and won the UFC heavyweight championship. A lot of fans were excited to see him return and now UFC critic and analyst Chael Sonnen has made his assessment of Jones’ return by keeping in mind one piece of advice he received from Joe Rogan.
Jon Jones shocked the world last weekend after defeating Ciryl Gane in just under two minutes of the opening round. He was consistently on the front foot, which compelled ‘Bon Gamin’ to drop backward. ‘Bones’ got Gane locked in a guillotine choke to claim the title. Jones also rose up the rankings in the pound-for-pound category.

Chael Sonnen has provided his take on his former rival’s performance. ‘The American Gangster’ has never been on good terms with Jon Jones. However, his views are in accordance with the advice he received from Joe Rogan back in 2008.
Chael Sonnen explains Joe Rogan’s advice
Sonnen claims that he has received only one piece of advice from the renowned podcaster, and that is to be real. This was the time when Sonnen didn’t expect to become an analyst for the sport. He said, “I’ve only been given one piece of advice ever by Joe Rogan.” Sonnen added, “When I got this and Joe said it to me, I never thought I was going to be a commentator …have an audience to cover the sport.”
He then proceeded to talk about Rogan’s advice. Sonnen said, “Joe said ‘if you’re even an announcer, say what you see and nothing.” He reminisced about being in a bar while getting this advice. “We were in a lobby bar of a hotel in Boston. It was just a light comment. Joe made it, he set it down, I picked it up. But I’ve always taken it with me,” said Sonnen.

Chael Sonnen explains that Rogan gave him this advice because there were a lot of fight promotions where announcers try to sell a level of excitement to the fans. However, those comments do not align with what viewers get to see. He then explained why he brought up Rogan’s words to him from nearly 15 years ago.
Sonnen said, “Why do I bring that [Rogan’s advice] up? This is remarkable what Jon [Jones] has just done.” He added, “If Jon were to win a world championship tonight, any division …that is what somebody that had boldness and courage to dream. It would be a shocking accomplishment.”
Jon Jones has received many words of praise, not just from the fans, but from many UFC personalities too. With such big kind words from his former rival, Jones has surely cemented his legacy as one of the greatest fighters in UFC and is still going strong.
