Robert Whittaker was anticipated to be Khamzat Chimaev’s toughest challenge to date. However, the fight took a surprising turn when Chimaev quickly took Whittaker down, showcasing his dominant grappling. In one of the fastest tap-outs ever witnessed from a former champion, Whittaker was forced to submit after Chimaev locked in a brutal face crank, ending the bout in an unusual fashion.

Fans were left in shock by the outcome until UFC 308 wrapped up when commentator Daniel Cormier posted a photo revealing the extent of Robert Whittaker’s injury. The image showed Whittaker’s teeth flattened from the pressure of Khamzat Chimaev’s choke. ‘The Reaper’ was not happy with Cormier leaking the picture, but a former UFC fighter feels he did the right thing.

Josh Thomson points out why Daniel Cormier shared the picture of Whittaker’s injury

Injury issues have long been a part of the UFC landscape, with fighters constantly battling through physical setbacks in their pursuit of greatness. From sprained ankles to torn ligaments, injuries are a constant threat to a fighter’s career, often forcing them to withdraw from highly anticipated bouts or, in the worst cases, to retire prematurely. The case was the same with Whittaker when he took on Khamzat Chimaev in one of the most important fights of his career.

However, the former champion was not concerned about the injury, but rather the way the news was leaked. During an appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show, Robert Whittaker opened up about his feelings regarding Daniel Cormier sharing the photo of his injury on the broadcast. Whittaker expressed his genuine emotions, revealing how the image affected him and how he felt about Cormier’s decision to post it for the public to see. He said, “I was super annoyed,” pointing out how Cormier took the photo from the doctor’s phone and shared it on social media without his permission. However, Josh ‘The Punk’ Thomson feels the picture would have eventually come out.

While speaking on the ‘Weighing In’ podcast, he shared his honest opinion on the whole. Thomson said, “Eventually someone was going to let the picture out. You see it all the time, like someone’s got a cut on their face and then they show the picture. I don’t know if it’s ever shared by the same person, but like it’s shared by the person that has that cut. Or if it’s a manager or somebody, but regardless, you know, I think eventually that picture would have got out. Robert didn’t want it out yet, so he called DC a scumbag for it. Thought it was kind of a scummy move to do.”

Khamzat Chimaev once again relied on his aggressive fighting style, avoiding the need to depend on his gas tank. From the outset, he relentlessly sought opportunities to finish the fight as quickly as possible, maintaining dominance throughout. His approach, focused on minimizing the number of rounds, allowed him to control the pace and dictate the action from start to finish. However, he was not happy seeing Whittaker getting injured in the fight.

Khamzat Chimaev didn’t want to injure Robert Whittaker as revealed by him

Khamzat Chimaev put on a dominant performance against Robert Whittaker, shutting down any critics who questioned his abilities. Although ‘Borz’ had been away from the Octagon since the previous year, this fight was far from easy. He had already garnered some negative attention due to his history of pulling out of fights and ongoing health issues, which had cast a shadow over his career.

However, Chimaev pushed past these challenges and focused solely on his performance, delivering a statement of victory in the process. While he did win the fight, he was concerned about the well-being of his opponent.

During the post-fight press conference, he said, “Before I came in here, they showed a picture of Whittaker’s injury to me, but I felt something was wrong with his chin when I pushed it. So, I feel bad for that; I didn’t mean to [break] somebody’s chin. But this is my work, you know. I make somebody feel pain, and that makes me happy and my family.” Fortunately for the fans, Whittaker has recovered from his injury and is once again back to training. He will once again have to work his way back to the top and seems ready for it.
