Sean O’Malley shocked the UFC world with his effortless victory over bantamweight Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 in Boston earlier this month. ‘Suga’ caught Sterling with an excellent counter right that caught the New Yorker on his chin in the second round. Although some feel the bout was stopped a bit prematurely, O’Malley’s understanding of distance and nimble footwork was what made the counter possible.

After his victory, speculations are rife on who his next opponent will be. While O’Malley has expressed his own desire to fight Marlon Vera, other contenders such as #1 ranked bantamweight Merab Dvalishvili is also strong candidate. The flamboyant bantamweight champion talked on this topic with Michael Bisping on the latter’s YouTube show.

There is a very good reason Sean O’Malley wants to fight the #6 ranked bantamweight Marlon Vera right after his biggest victory. O’Malley’s only loss of his career came against Vera at UFC 252, three years ago. The Montana native has always contested that loss and maintains that he was still undefeated. And now he wants to avenge that defeat.

“[If it’s just like] who’s the next guy in line by ranking, yeah, it’s Merab [Dvalishvili]. I’m the champ, I want [the Chito fight], let’s see what happens… Let’s make sure everyone knows I’m not going [after] Chito because he’s the biggest name, because he doesn’t carry much of a draw – no offense,” O’Malley told Bisping. “The only reason a Chito fight is such a big deal is just because of that controversial fight. So that’s why that fight’s big,” he said.
