Dana White and the Power Slap League have come under fire yet again due to concerns for the participants’ health. According to a recent report, a ‘Power Slapper’ was rushed to the hospital due to complications arising from a weight cut before the event. Slap fighting, as the sport is commonly known, has come under fire from experts due to its high-impact knockouts and rules that penalize flinching or defending yourself.

As such, fans were quick to express their concerns online as they felt the contest did not need the harsh process of cutting weight. The complications arise due to the severe dehydration process that athletes undergo to compete in their desired weight class. And many fans pointed out that Power Slap contestants aren’t “athletes” and should not be putting themselves through the ordeal!

Veteran referee defends ‘Power Slap League’ amidst safety concerns

Referee Mark Smith, with over 100 UFC fights under his belt, in a recent interview with MMA Junkie, claimed that Power Slap is safer than its detractors believe. Critics have questioned the safety of Power Slap, a controversial activity where opponents slap each other with hands behind their backs, focusing on knockouts.

Smith emphasized the extensive safety measures in place, including thorough pre-event meetings and the presence of top-tier doctors at ringside.

He stated, “Very extensive rules, before every event I take all the fighters through a really extensive safety and rules meeting. In addition to that, we have the greatest doctors in the world that are cageside or matside, or however you want to call it.”

The veteran referee also explained that the team surrounding the contest wants to ensure that contestants do not suffer “unnecessary damage” and as such, they can stop the fight at any time.

While Power Slap has faced skepticism, Smith’s reassurances suggest a dedication to ensuring the well-being of participants, challenging detractors and supporting the idea that the sport is safer than commonly perceived.
