No one is happy with how the UFC 310 Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov 2 clash turned out. Not even Gane, who walked out of the Octagon before the decision for his fight came in. Perhaps the Frenchman, like the fans, analysts, and Dana White believed he had lost the bout. In the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, ‘Bon Gamin’ would claim that the only reason he walked out of the cage was because he had broken his toe in the opening round and wasn’t happy with his performance.
But most suspect this was because he thought he had lost the fight and didn’t want to stick around and hear his impending fate. Either way, the point is that most feel Volkov was robbed in what was seen as a number one title contender bout for the heavyweight title. This includes former UFC heavyweight and podcaster Brendan Schaub and his ‘The Fighter and the Kid’ podcast co-host, Bryan Callen.
After all, Schaub, in no uncertain terms made his thoughts on the decision known, saying on their podcast: “Ciryl Gane I thought easily lost that fight.” Callen was even more damning, calling Gane “overrated.” To which Schaub reminded Callen that Gane was a pretty hyped prospect, but him getting “absolutely annihilated by Jon Jones” in the first round of their UFC 285 clash had derailed ‘Bon Gamin’s hype train.

Schaub was absolutely incredulous at the decision and was pretty critical of the judges. “I don’t understand that. Those judges, like, what are you looking at dude?” he asked. This quickly reminded Schaub that “even Dana after the fight went up to Volkov’s cage side and was like dude you got f***ed,” Schaub said.

This controversial decision has raised many questions, including whether is Gane the number one title contender now. And by the mood of the MMA community, the answer seems a definitive no!
Dana White apologizes to Volkov as ‘Drago’s coach insists he is next in line for title shot
As soon as Alexander Volkov walked out of the cage after the Gane rematch, Dana White walked up to ‘Drago’ and let him know in no uncertain terms what he thought of the decision. “You got f***ed. That’s horrible, I don’t know what we’ll do but we’ll try to make it right by you, okay?… They f***ed that one up bad, I’ll talk to you in a little while, again, I apologize,” the UFC boss struggled to explain to Volkov, who doesn’t speak much English.

Since Gane was ranked #3 in the division and Volkov #2 coming into UFC 310, their fight was seen as a virtual title eliminator. But with the controversial decision and even the head honcho feeling like Volkov won, it is very doubtful that the promotion will allow Gane to fight for the title next. For context, nineteen of the twenty media members’ scorecards available on ‘mmadecisions.com’ also had Volkov winning the fight. That is how egregious the decision was.
This is why there seems to be a lot of merit in Volkov’s manager’s claims after the event that the UFC was looking at the Russian, not Gane as the title contender. The UFC, however, has not confirmed this. But it would not be surprising since the consensus is that Volkov was robbed. What do you think about Schaub and Callen’s take on the Gane-Volkov 2 decision?
