The UFC welterweight scrap between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev has once again been canceled for the third straight time. The two were set to battle on March 13, 2021, however, COVID-19 continues to ravage this particular booking. Chiefly, Chimaev is still reeling from the effects of contracting the virus and will undergo treatment to his lungs per Dana White.

The two were scheduled to face off on two occasions, and COVID-19 was the reason that the fight hasn’t happened thus far. Leon Edwards was the first fighter to withdraw back out of their December 19, 2020 booking. Subsequently, the two were placed as headliners again for a January 20, 2021 card, but ‘Borz’ Chimaev pulled out.

“I’m so bummed out. I was so excited. That was one of my favorite fights this year,” White told ESPN. “The one thing you have to look at right now is health. Let’s make sure this guy is healthy, get him the best care we can and make sure he makes a full recovery.”

“[Matchmaker Sean Shelby] is literally in the other room right now working on a new fight for Leon Edwards,” White added.

The curse continues- Leon Edwards vs Khamzat Chimaev

The fight was once expected to be the biggest welterweight feature fight of perhaps the entire year. It’s likely the UFC brass will decide to entirely look past booking the bout again, and it’s easy to see why. Leon Edwards who’s had a traditionally hard time finding fights will sit out once more.

Not to mention, the ‘Breakout Fighter of 2020’ in Khamzat Chimaev has definitely lost some amount of momentum coming in. After some scintillating performances in a row, he’s now had a meaningful period away from the cage. However, getting back to prime form is of utmost importance and that will be within Khamzat Chimaev’s team priority list.
