After Ilia Topuria shocked the world and defeated former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, ‘El Matador’ asked Dana White to host an event in Spain. Furthermore, Dana White even liked that idea and expressed his wish to host an event at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. With that said, Volkanovski recently shared an update about his next move and confirmed that a rematch against Topuria could be in order.

After over four years as the undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski witnessed the end of his title reign at UFC 298. He went into the fight as a favorite, but Ilia Topuria got the better of him and knocked him out in the second round. However, Volkanovski is not done yet. Alexander Volkanovski recently shared a video on his YouTube channel and provided an update as to what his next plans are. The former champion mentioned that he wants a rematch, and he has no issues with fighting Ilia Topuria in the latter’s home country of Spain, something that Dana White seems to have agreed on. The UFC CEO has expressed an interest in wanting to host a UFC event at the iconic home ground of the Real Madrid soccer team, Santiago Bernabéu, which has a crowd capacity of over 81,000.

“I definitely want that rematch. Spain’s the [venue] is what I’m hearing is going to happen. Dana wants Spain. Obviously, Ilia wants Spain,” said Alexander Volkanovski. He believes that by the time the event in Spain takes place, he will have enough time to recover and regroup to prepare for Ilia Topuria. In addition to that, Volkanovski also updated the fans about his condition after the knockout defeat.

‘The Great’ also mentioned that he had his plans laid out against Ilia Topuria. But he praised ‘El Matador’ for getting him to the fence, which Alexander Volkanovski claimed was not the ideal position to be in when fighting someone like Topuria. “I had him missing, you know. Started touching [him] and then I was going to start adding on. He did a great job of getting to the cage [fence], where we knew we didn’t want to be with someone like him,” conveyed the Aussie star.

The loss against Ilia Topuria will take nothing away from Alexander Volkanovski. He has been at the helm of the featherweight division for over four years, which is not a petty achievement by any means according to fans and many UFC personalities. It will be interesting to see if Dana White has the same intentions as Volkanovski, one of the longest-reigning champions of the promotion in recent memory.
