Boycott Canelo? Is the MMA community right to stand against him after Dana White's massive loss?

It’s shaping up to be a dramatic clash between the UFC and Canelo Alvarez for Mexican Independence Day. The highly anticipated UFC 306 event is just a few weeks away but it’s losing its hype, thanks to a fierce competitor. UFC CEO Dana White has reportedly invested more than $20 million to make the Las Vegas Sphere event on September 14 a success. White has also done pretty well in setting up the fight card, as the main fight features Sean O’Malley defending his bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili. However, it seems that the promotion is still struggling to pull in the crowd for the event.

One of the biggest stars of boxing, Canelo Alvarez, will also be featuring on the same day at the T-Mobile Arena in Vegas. The Mexican will take on Edgar Berlanga to defend the WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight titles in the highly anticipated clash. The UFC was previously expected to host the event at the T-Mobile Arena where the Mexican will be fighting next. This was the same situation one year back where Alvarez had to wait till September 30 to take on Jermell Charlo for their bout. The UFC beat him to the secure the venue to host the maiden Noche event on September 16 last year.

However, things have changed quite drastically since the UFC’s partnership with MGM took a turn. The venue had been booked for another event without informing the UFC and White. The entire incident did not sit well with the 54-year-old, and as a result, they are now hosting the event at the Sphere.

‘BoxingWorldFans’ recently took to their Instagram page to share a post comparing both fights. The caption read, “On September 14, Canelo Alvarez will fight Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This event will also coincide with UFC 306 at The Sphere. Which event do you think will get more ppv sales?”

The fans took notice of the whole thing and, just like most occasions, did not shy away from sharing their opinion. As of now, the UFC has around 3000 tickets unsold, with only a few days left for the event. It is believed that the lowest ticket price, which was once kept at $3000, has been slashed to $800. So how are the fans feeling about it?

Canelo Alvarez does not look like he wants to defend his belt against the rightful challenger David Benavidez, and the latter has switched to light heavyweight to fight for the title. This is the reason one of the users feels many will boycott his fight, I’m a boxing fan all the way, but I think UFC has this one. Fans will probably boycott Canelo a bit for not fighting Benavidez.  While one of the fans seemed to be upset with the boxer, another is rooting for him on September 14, “Canelo for sure”

While the boxing fans want to see their star in action, the MMA fans are not much behind. One of the fans made a contrasting comparison and commented, UFC is way more better and entertaining.” While most of the fans are divided between boxing and the UFC there is one who is willing to watch both of them together, “Don’t really care, I’m buying both. So they need to stop throwing hissy fits”

Sean O’Malley has time and again claimed that he is one of the biggest stars in the UFC at the moment. However, it seems he is yet to impress many, as one of the fans feels there are no superstars in the UFC fighting on September 14, “Canelo lol I love mma but legit super stars are either retired or on their way out”

Despite Edgar Berlanga being undefeated in his career one of the users feels the fight doesn’t hold much importance and commented, “UFC easy. Nobody cares about Canelo beating some random b..m” Talking about stardom, one of the users feels that the boxer Canelo Alvarez will outshine both fighters of the UFC. He feels they are not at the same level and commented that “Sean or merab are not on the same level as canelo if we taking PPV”

Currently, there are a lot of mixed reactions from the fans about whom they will be watching on September 14. While there are some who are rooting for the boxing match, there are some who will be watching the UFC. However, the biggest question is who will be able to draw in the maximum pay-per-view numbers.
