Does Chimaev's win over Whittaker signal a new era for Caucasian fighters in the UFC?

After fighting Robert Whittaker at UFC 308, Khamzat Chimaev not only lengthened his undefeated record, 14-0, but also proved he was as dominant as he used to be. He submitted his opponent in round 1 via a face crank, but the aftermath was bloody for Whittaker. People speculated that ‘Borz’ broke Whittaker’s jaw and several graphic images went viral on social media. However, the latter came forward and put all speculations to an end. In a statement, he wrote, “My jaw is good, but my teeth were moved in. It’s a good excuse to fix them properly now.”

Now, weeks after the victory, Chimaev posted a powerful image from the fight on Instagram. He captioned it, “Blood for blood, this is the KAVKAZ!” What does this mean?

It is speculated that this was a message to his fellow Muslim and Russian fighters in the UFC, signaling that a fallen fighter from their brotherhood would be avenged by a compatriot. This mindset, deeply rooted in the legacy of Dagestani fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev—who proudly represent their region and Muslim culture—reflects a ‘one for all, all for one’ mentality, where they stand firmly behind each other. But whose loss did ‘Borz’ avenge?

It could have been for his compatriot and Dagestani prospect Ikram Aliskerov, who had faced Whittaker on short notice at UFC’s debut event in Saudi Arabia this past summer after Chimaev, originally scheduled to fight Whittaker, fell ill and was forced to withdraw. To fill the void on this important Middle East card, UFC President Dana White brought in Aliskerov.

However, the 31-year-old lost to Whittaker in round 1 via KO. So when Aliskerov saw Chimaev’s Instagram post, he was happy and commented, “💪🏻💪🏻”

Interesting Fact: Khamzat Chimaev may have avenged Aliskerov’s previous loss to Robert Whittaker, but did you know that Chimaev and Aliskerov fought in the cage once? Back in 2019, both the fighters faced off at ‘Brave CF 23 – Pride & Honor’. Chimaev won the fight in round 1 via KO. Interestingly, this was the only loss on Aliskerov’s record until he lost to Whittaker.

This marks the first time this kind of sentiment has come from the Chechen-born Chimaev, who has often been at odds with Dagestani star Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team. Though they previously mentioned they sorted their issues, it looked like some differences prevailed.

Despite all that has happened, this unity among and belief in brotherhood remains strong, with fighters supporting each other regardless of rivalries. This camaraderie has set them apart from others and was even commended by UFC veteran Royce Gracie and Joe Rogan.

Royce Gracie reveals the secret behind Khabib and Khamzat Chimaev’s success

In the fight world, Russian fighters—especially Dagestani athletes—have emerged as some of the top contenders, with Chechnya recently gaining recognition for its fighting spirit. These regions, once heavily affected by conflict during the post-Soviet era, are now producing a new generation of fighters.

This wave includes UFC featherweight king Ilia Topuria and bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili from Georgia, as well as Armenian lightweight Arman Tsarukyan and Chechen fighter Khamzat Chimaev. Fighters from across the Caucasus region are stepping into the spotlight, following in the footsteps of their Russian counterparts.

In episode #156 of the JRE MMA Show, Joe Rogan and Royce Gracie discussed the dominance of Russian wrestling, with Rogan praising their wrestling style. However, Gracie offered a different perspective, emphasizing their resilience and hard work. Gracie noted, “I don’t think it’s just because of their wrestling. I think it’s because of their discipline. And I tell a lot of people that those guys don’t think about anything else—just train,” a statement that even Rogan couldn’t disagree with.

What are your thoughts on Khamzat Chimaev‘s post? Could his cryptic message ‘blood for blood’ be a reference to Robert Whittaker’s previous win against Ikram Aliskerov, or is it about something else? Share your opinion below.
