The phrase ‘just because you can doesn’t mean you should’ comes to mind when one thinks about Dana White‘s Power Slap League. This peculiar slap-fighting league has faced criticism from medical experts, fans, and fighters alike for its concussive nature, which is believed to pose a significant risk of long-term brain damage for participants.
And the big question that looms in the minds of the fans is why the Las Vegas resident felt compelled to establish the league when he has his hands full with the UFC. This major ‘why?’ has left many fans puzzled. But in a revealing interview with Donald Trump Jr. on the ‘Triggered’ podcast, White discussed in depth why he was drawn to the bizarre sport.

In an episode of the ‘Triggered’ podcast, Donald Trump Jr. asked Dana White how he got interested in starting the Power Slap league, a sport no one in the US had tried to commercialize before. White revealed that his interest in slap fighting was piqued when he saw a video of it coming out of Eastern Europe and Russia.
“So, in like ’17, I started to see these things popping up on my social media- slapping. So I looked into it, [it was] coming out of Russia and Poland and places like that. And I took a deeper dive and started looking on YouTube,” he said.
The widespread popularity of these videos compelled the UFC boss to take a deeper look into the sport. And he found one particular video with terrible production quality that had over 300 million views. This discovery got his gears turning, and he felt he could enhance the sport’s presentation and production.
“And you had this video that looked like it was shot on a flip-phone. Looked like it was in a barn and they were slapping over a barrel. And this thing had 350 million views. [And I thought] ‘What would happen if I did this and did it the right way?” said the UFC CEO.
White proudly boasted that “the answer is billions of views”. And he put those numbers in context by comparing them to the numbers of all other major sports and making a startling claim.

White continued and told Trump Jr. that the social media engagement of Power Slap was a staggering four times greater than the combined numbers of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, UFC, WWE, NASCAR, F1, and PGA.
“So if you took the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NBA, the NHL, the UFC, the WWE, NASCAR, F1, PGA, you combine their numbers together and multiply them by four, Power Slap does higher numbers on social media. The thing is an absolute juggernaut on social media,” White said.
