The champion clearly isn’t looking past Della Maddalena, but he’s made one thing clear. The belt isn’t leaving his waist.

The challenger fired back with confidence, too. “Strap season in full swing,” Della Maddalena posted on Instagram, signaling his readiness for war. Fresh off a highlight-reel knockout of Gilbert Burns, the Aussie is riding a wave of momentum.

A seven-fight UFC win streak, an unshakable belief in his striking, and now, a title shot on the biggest stage of his career. The opportunity is there.Will he seize it?

But that wasn’t the only headline Muhammad made on social media. On X, he took a playful shot at the situation and wrote, “Dang I stole Leon’s belt and his opponent.” A cheeky reminder that before this switch, Della Maddalena was set to fight Leon Edwards in London. Instead, Muhammad now gets the rising contender, while Edwards faces Sean Brady.

But why did Jack Della Maddalena get the title shot instead of Shavkat Rakhmonov? After all, the undefeated Kazakh, fresh off his win over Ian Garry, was seen as the next rightful challenger by many in the MMA world, including the welterweight champion!

Shavkat Rakhmonov’s injury throws a wrench in Belal Muhammad’s plans

Initially, all signs pointed to Belal Muhammad defending his belt against Shavkat Rakhmonov. Even Muhammad himself spoke about a timeline for their fight during a conversation with MMA Junkie. ‘Remember the Name’ stated, “Right after Ramadan, I think. May, June, is the perfect timeline for me.”

But when the fight never materialized, questions began to swirl. Fans were left wondering what happened. The mystery was finally solved when Daniel Cormier revealed on his YouTube show that Rakhmonov had suffered an injury. “I think Shavkat hurt himself,” Cormier told his surprised co-host, Ben Askren, on ‘Funky and the Champ’.

Shortly after, Rakhmonov himself took to X, writing, “Big thanks to the UFC for offering me the shot at the belt first. Unfortunately, due to injury, I won’t be ready for May. I’ll be facing the winner later this year!”

As such, instead of an elite grappler in Rakhmonov, Muhammad will have to deal with the striking-heavy approach of Jack Della Maddalena.  If Della Maddalena wins, he won’t just be securing UFC gold. He’ll be disrupting the entire division’s landscape. A victory would push him into the spotlight as Australia’s latest champion and set up intriguing matchups down the line. Perhaps even a showdown with Rakhmonov once the Kazakh recovers!
